Let's not do deontology. We just do not have to lol

The one thing that’s become clear to me over the last five years is that libertarianism, left or right, is essentially a death cult. It’s the mirror image of the LessWrong guys except we’ve been conditioned to think that ‘Deontology Monster’ is a moral and epistemic position worth taking seriously

a lot of young boys are watching streamers like The Peacocking Philosopher and getting exposed to deontology

A moral philosophy paper recently written by me, presenting a new liar paradox-like argument about consequentialism.

It would be great if you could share this to promote my work, thank you :

Arthur Ionescu, The Consequentialist Judgment Paradox - PhilPapers
In normative ethics, some of the oldest and still lively debates revolve around the question of consequentialism. The question is not so much about making a binary decision between consequentialism an...

Yeah, I get it...
It's kinda the whole utilitarianism vs deontology clash we have...
I do get his point of view, but I still don't approve his ways, haha

📢Good news of the day 🥳 the ethically unacceptable 💉HBV0 vs nothing RCT in Guinea-Bissau proposed by @stabellbenn.bsky.social and supported by RFK has been cancelled *again*! ⛔ 😅

Well done Africa CDC, @pauloffit.bsky.social , and all the people who stood up for deontology and their rights! ✊
NEW: Kennedy's plan to study Hep. B vaccine in African babies has been suspended by Guinea-Bissau. Experts say the trial is unethical in a nation where 1 in 5 kids are exposed to Hep. B, which can take decades off their lives. HHS: the trial is "paused."

taught this every time I did NSW ethics briefs. More valuable for most practitioners, in my assessment, than anything on utilitarianism/deontology/whatever.

I was mostly saying that I think that if you can manage a system which somehow uses various pieces of different systems and rejected the parts that don‘t work, that in itself could be a fully defined system. But I don’t think you can do that.

And I reject deontology out of hand, I think.

Weaponized even. Divide et Impera.

This is not about ideology, deontology, or even decency.
This is scripted as an intentional strategy.
This is a power grab.

Just watch what's going to happen this year.

It's the dumbest, most narrow version of deontology where the only ethical stance is "respectful equality" where no wrongdoing can possibly be considered worse or more dangerous than any other. Being rude and killing someone are equal evils. It's the "Wishing Nazis were dead makes you a Nazi" take.
In case there’s any doubt about what TCW means here, his subsequent retweet of David French makes it clear

Several books by @adapalmer.bsky.social! Inventing the Renaissance gives us several profiles of renaissance superstars that are honest about “oh this dude was at minimum gay as hell”, and deontology vs virtue ethics with pop culture characters as test cases. Also read all of Terra Ignota this year!

My 'The virtues of cultivated meat' is now available OPEN ACCESS in the Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics.

I make a case for cultivated meat using virtue ethics, complementing existing cases drawing upon consequentialism or deontology.
The Virtues of Cultivated Meat - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics
Most ethicists defending cellular agriculture draw upon consequentialism or deontology. There has been no thoroughgoing virtue-ethical defence. In this paper, I explore three sets of reasons that the ...

Morality system in a video game but instead of good and evil it's a list of stats for shit like deontology, utilitarianism, divine command theory, etc.

Philosophical theories should have theme songs.

Deontology? "Johnny B. Goode"

Presentism? "The Times They Are a-Changing"

Idealism? "Always On My Mind"

Philosophy of mind? Of course, "Proud Mary"!

Qualia? "More Than a Feeling"

Learn and Apply Formal Ethical Frameworks:

Deontology (duty‑based)-

“What duties do I have, independent of outcomes?”

Assess whether a rule respects individual rights even if it yields efficient results.

Worrying that enjoying good action makes you bad is protestant baggage that Kant (a deontologist) stuck you with. There's good shit to take from deontology but that part is best consigned to the rubbish heap of failed ethical systems, like egoism & act-utilitarianism. Enjoy your good deeds. Be free

any serious consequentialism/deontology pushes one to adopt a virtue ethics-y orientation toward building personal character to act in accordance with those aspirations!

listen it's already a fucking nightmare talking to an NPC and having to have to guess what parts of what he's saying are just pleasantries and what parts are actually clues to the story. No I extremely do not want an NPC that can take a 72-hour digression into deontology for no reason.
Nothing grates me more than when AI game dudes are like "Don't you wish you could ask an NPC aNyThInG?" Absolutely fucking not. If you don't understand that every piece of writing is made with intention, character, and meaningful choice... you probaby shouldn't be directing a fucking video game.

idk I guess I feel that many peopel across the ideological spectrum deploy deontology in their arguments and then switch back to utilitarian arguments when it suits them
December 17, 2025 at 11:28 PM
While it's gotten very business class popsci ("thinking fast vs thinking slow") I do repeatedly find a sharp distinction among many people between heuristic/rule based thinking (eg where they follow a code & respond to things) and overall-evaluative tradeoff thinking. Deontology vs consequentialism.

All means must be considered an end in themselves. If the means to your ends do not each stand alone as an act you find moral, then you are making dangerous choices.

This is the basis of Deontology, as opposed to Utilitarianism which is ends justify means if it results in greater good.

This week the Project on Ethics in Political Communication is reading about consequentialism and deontology, and watching Democratic intervention in Republican primaries.
