Jim Ryan's letter is not just surreal and troubling; it provides a series of deeply sobering lessons—about the perils facing public universities today; about what it means to "work with" this Department of Justice; & about what leadership does (and doesn't) entail at this especially fraught moment.
Former UVA president Jim Ryan, who resigned over the summer due to pressure from the Trump Administration, just shared this 12-page letter with the Faculty Senate, detailing his experience with the Board of Visitors and DOJ.

It's a surreal--and troubling--read.

Trump is demanding that GOP side with him over Epstein's victims, Rep Ansari tells me. She had a harrowing exchange with one victim who recounts how her mom had cancer and he exploited that.

Also note her mockery of network disclaimers on Trump. More like this, Ds:

this is a bit of a side point to the contest here, but it seems plain to me that a multi-generational working out of an effective symbolic consensus re our history of racial & gender iniquities can only proceed haltingly & w great strife. ofc, this fight over electoral praxis is just a small thread.
1/2 One of the big problems for the always-punching-left Democratic consultants is that they are waging ideological battles in public that actually _reinforce_ the left-wing image of the party that they are trying to fight. That is a risk they have decided

It's easy to get inured to the crazy, but this is Trump referring to the main exterior window of the East Room, a part of the White House that has been there since 1800, as "a knock-out panel," a construction term for a temporary part of a wall designed to be easily demolished to allow for expansion
Trump: "Right behind me by the way, in about 2 years from now, is a much bigger room. This will be the entrance. That's a knockout panel. It looks pretty nice right now but it'll look a lot better in a little while... The future entrance to something that's really become very popular, the ballroom."

Do political science profs have to explain to their students that, for most of American history, it was actually borderline unthinkable that elected officials and their spokespersons would constantly talk like trashy reality show contestants?
