When you find a children's book about scrimshaw, and your father and sister are like, two of six people who make it, you add it to your TBR immediately.

It's almost Spooky Season! I love reading spooky books this time of year! I love everything from brutal visceral horror to cozy, Halloweentown-esque reads!
Here are a few October goals and some recs!

Welcome in the Fall season by checking out my cozy gothic mystery series, where queer kids solve occult crimes. Find the Deephaven Mysteries wherever you get books!

"Deephaven" by Ethan Aldridge is on my tbr; I've enjoyed his other books a lot. If graphic novels work, "The Ojja Wojja" by Magdalene Visaggio and "Manu!" by Kelly Fernandez are good.

Right now I'm reading a middle-grade Gothic mystery called Deephaven; its sequel, Scrimshaw, will probably come next. After that, I might reread The Body Keeps the Score, or it might be sociology texts about race relations. I try to switch off between light reading and educational reading.

The Hotel St. Louis in Deephaven
🏨 Origins & Founding Charles “Sir Charles” Gibson, a wealthy St. Louis attorney and self‑styled knight, bought land at Breezy Point and built a summer home called Northome in the 1870s. In 1879–80, he constructed the Hotel  St. Louis, Deephaven’s first grand resort. The 150–200 room, three‑story wooden hotel featured verandas on every floor, indoor plumbing, electricity, and even an electric bell system to summon staff. 🌄 Golden Years in the 1880s Positioned on Carson’s and St. Louis Bays of Lake Minnetonka, the hotel catered to wealthy Southerners seeking relief from the summer heat.

I saw the images before I saw who posted it and had a brief moment of "wow that art looks familiar" then I glanced at the text portion, then up at my work computer, then giggled a bit. (I downloaded this earlier today at the advice of a trusted colleague and can't wait to dig in!)

I haven't had much time to read this year, and most of my books were put into storage for reasons, but I did manage to finish two books in my downtime!
Relinquished Realms by Joaquín Baldwin and Podkin One-Ear by Kieran Larwood!
Just in time to start Deephaven by Ethan Aldridge for spooky month!

Explore the Sprawling Gardens of a Deephaven Home
The 1905 Craftsman home on the shores of Lake Minnetonka seems like it was made for Barbara Burgum, who purchased it in 1999. While she’s spent years preserving and rehabilitating the stately house, the grounds themselves have offered another fertile opportunity: an outlet for Burgum’s passion for gardening and the natural world. Burgum, a retired landscape architect, overhauled the 2-acre property in 2012. She invited two of her landscape architecture classmates, Frank Fitzgerald and Fred Rozumalski, to help her draw up detailed plans. “We had a brain trust,” Burgum says. “I gave everyone topographic maps, and everyone went off in a corner and sketched.” Although the gardens have drifted quite a bit from those original plans (Burgum says she’s a “live and let live” gardener.), the blueprints laid the foundation for the driveway, hardscaping, rain gardens and other features. It's close to 100 degrees out and rising, but I've closed all the drapes and I'm cozy in bed with a cup of tea, pretending it's a nice gloomy day. Curling up with a new spooky read so I can catalog it for my students tomorrow! 🙀💚📚 We loved Deephaven & they'll be excited for the sequel

Okay I just started Deephaven (it just came out!) But so far love it. Spooky, cozy, queer. Scorpio Races are a November staple, but I also like Stardust for autumn. Lockwood and Co and Sabriel are great for some spooks. But Dark Lord of Derkholm is my old autumn standby.

Kelly used to be in the OB/GYN group of my former OB/GYN. It is is pure coincidence she also was from Wayzata/Deephaven area.

Middle grade recs incoming! We’ve had at least one person ask for these specifically so that they can share reading time with their younger family members, which sounds lovely. 💕 #booksky #trr25 #transrightsreadathon
