I spent one summer as an assistant lockkeeper at Culham about 5mins walk from Orwell’s grave. A surprising number of visitors would fail to find it because they didn’t know it was a nom-de-plume.

Teenage me would only selectively give out this information.
Today we launch at new @EmpirePodUK series-
WRITERS ON EMPIRE

We kick off with a four-part look at George Orwell

I come from the Culham direction and yeah, it's so unsafe to get to and there's nowhere once you're there that they're happy about me locking my bike to so I haven't bothered going back in a long time. Fixing those issues would be amazing!

Improvements to active travel in 'Science Vale' took a step forward as CulBUG met with @ollyglover.bsky.social & @nathanley.com at @ukaeaofficial.bsky.social Culham Campus on Friday.

In particular, there were ideas for short & long term solutions for A415 Tollgate crossing and Abingdon causeway 🚴‍♀️

Adams, by the way, is fascinating. Not only did he not have a PhD, he had no university education whatsoever. Yet, he rose to become director of the UK's fusion research lab at Culham and a co-leader of CERN. 📷 © CERN #histsci #HPS royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/pdf/10.1...

.. because in so many places, improving access to the rail stations will also benefit other local cycling trips. E.g. we fix Culham station to Abingdon, benefits all the Europa kids & people who work at Culham. Fix Wallingford to Cholsey - benefits the community. Ditto Thame to H&T Parkway.

The French are at the forefront of fusion research. The ITER project in Caderache is a scaled-up version of the old Culham JET facility here in the UK.

ITER couldn't happen in the UK now because the Press would spit out their collective dummies over immigrant scientists and their 'dependents'.

😕 Bad to cut Abingdon off from Culham & Clifton Hampden, let alone Oxford.

Hampers any project involving rural-vs-city: transport, energy generation. In general, makes it awkward for the city (with its restricted land) to use rural areas for reasonable purposes: rural would simply refuse.
