#Churchill’s
I've been saying it will possibly become our equivalent to Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech. End of one era, start of another.

These are shorts. The point was to compare them with each other to see how different decades of the NFB coincided with different ideas about documentary and how realism is manufactured. It's pretty insightful, especially when contrasting something like Lonely Boy to Churchill's Island

Also watched Churchill's Island (1941), Women Are Warriors (1942), Keep Your Mouth Shut (1944), Neighbours (1952), Corral (1954), Lonely Boy (1962), Very Nice Very Nice (1961)

If you have time, maybe listen to Cdn PM Mark Carney's speech at Davos about a week ago. He said what everyone was secretly thinking.

It is called, "Saying what needs to be said".

He is a real politician who was giving a real speech.

Reminded my of Churchill's famous WWII speech.

He talked very contemptuously of Churchill's poetry, observing, that 'it had a temporary currency, only from its audacity of abuse, and being filled with living names, and that it would sink into oblivion.' I ventured to hint that he was not quite a fair judge, as Churchill had attacked him

One of the few times Stalin kept his word. He agreed to Churchill's deal. Greece would be in the British zone of influence. The Communists in Greece only support was from Tito, not Stalin.

Can't we find a vaguely relevant historical comparison? Surely someone close to Lloyd George was in some dodgy business. Or Churchill's crowd. Brendan Bracken was very dodgy.

Isn't it true that Churchill's "we shall fight them on the beaches" speech used no Latin-derived words?

The Declaration of Independence. Churchill's declaration of war. If it's for teaching, I've used these Dinosaur Comics:

A dogged battle sees both Hun ships damaged and retreating to Kiel, but for the price of two British cruisers sunk. While I lick my wounds and weather Churchill's wrath, a German convoy slips by. It seems to be heading for Norway. Could this be an invasion? To be continued...

My favie Scottish suffragette was Irish. Mary Maloney dogged Winston Churchill's 1908 by-election campaign in Dundee. He refused to talk about the suffrage so she said he wouldn't talk about anything then & followed him around ringing a bell to drown out his voice. Slan, Mary. /6

This one is *almost* Churchill’s (alleged) quip about Clement Atlee’s taxi in reverse, or rather updated for more recent times …

Hitler wasn't exactly a fan of Churchill's speech either. That's what Wherry would write about if he was a writer then...

Churchill's funeral was on a Saturday, 61-years ago today. Skipped my usual TV cartoons that morning and watched the proceedings for hours. And then it was off to youthful adventures and misdeeds and the years passed by and somehow our paths crossed again 50-years later. Life is funny that way.

Churchill’s Funeral

On this day in history, 61 years ago, January 30, 1965, the funeral procession and service for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was the largest gathering of world leaders up to that time. (1/5)
