I know some of the houses at Butser Ancient Farm are getting on a bit, but the person to ask about all things Iron Age houses is probably David Freeman, whose details you’ll be able to find if you look up Gallica Historical Interpretation. He’s usually very happy to share his knowledge! 2/2

Very interesting article on malting, wild cereals and prehistory. Also article on Butser experimental archeology giving estimates of prehistoric timber and thatch resource use.
Last year we wrote about malt in prehistory. Here's a link. Pages 12 to 15 in the Autumn issue of PAST, newsletter for The Prehistoric Society. A short piece explaining what malted grain is and what it does.
The importance of being malted. Free download. 🏺

Check out the Butser blog this week to learn more about carnyces & why they are so rare: www.butserancientfarm.co.uk/blog/2026/1/...

Happy New Year to you, too. Apart from getting older, no cardigan and Werthers yet, so walking, maintenance at Butser Ancient Farm and getting back into folk music playing. Hoping for a few holidays this year; not servicing family demands.

Archaeology is often reduced to finds in the media. But for me the most important thing are the people I get to work with.
Here are some highlights from '25 starting with @uclarchaeology.bsky.social staff & students who worked with @butserancientfarm.co.uk to make #Archaeotech2025 happen. 🏺1/5

I’ve studied Roman board games and finally had the pleasure of playing both of these at Butser Ancient Farm the other day, both with my kid and at the Lord of Misrule’s table. I’ve drawn these boards and pieces so you can do so too as part of your festive celebrations…

View of the day: Butser Hill 🙌

The highest observing point in Hampshire, with 360 degree views and, on a clear night, you can admire the Milky Way in all its glittering glory.

Today’s dog walk was on Butser Hill
December 20, 2025 at 12:46 PM
Took the dog for a walk up Butser this morning. The weather was absolutely foul and turned out to be one of the (many) bad decisions I’ve made.

Still, the dog enjoyed it.

According to co-author Simon Parfitt:

"This discovery gives us a rare window into a moment when early humans were not just using fire, but had begun to understand & control it. This discovery highlights the ingenuity & skill involved in mastering fire, a game-changing moment in human evolution.”

Therefore, Roman occupation has widely been viewed as having a negative impact on the overall health of the population, but health in the preceding Iron Age has been comparatively overlooked, meaning our understanding of the Roman impact is limited 3/13
