I'm quite struck thinking about how early Batman shifted from a gun-using pulp copy to the character we know, perhaps as Jill Lepore suggests, due to a Supreme Court case sensibly regulating guns, which led to abandoning his guns & drafting an origin that prominently defines him as against all guns

On September 1, 1939, the German army invaded Poland. Two days later, Britain and France declared war on Germany. In the October 1939 issue of Detective Comics, Batman killed a vampire by shooting silver bullets into his heart. In the next issue, Batman fired a gun at two evil henchmen. When Whitney Ellsworth, DC's editorial director, got a first look at a draft of the next installment, Batman was shooting again. Ellsworth shook his head and said, Take the gun out. 1 Batman had debuted in Detective Com-ics in May 1939, the same month that the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling in United States v. Miller, a landmark gun-control case. It concerned the constitutionality of the 1934 National Firearms Act and the 1938 Federal Firearms Act, which effectively banned machine guns through prohibitive taxation, and regulated handgun ownership by introducing licensing, waiting period, and permit requirements. The National Rifle Association supported the legislation (at the time, the NRA was a sportsman's organization). But gun manufacturers challenged it on the grounds that federal control of gun ownership violated the Second Amendment. FDR's solicitor general said the Second Amendment had nothing to do with an individual right to own a gun; it had to do with the common defense. The court agreed, unanimously.2 scenes of batman using a gun from the comics and text from Jill Lepore's secret history of Wonder Woman that reads: With war devastating Europe, the disarming of the dark knight was Detective Comics' deferral to a cherished American idea about the division between civilian and military life. Superheroes weren't soldiers; they were private citizens. And so, late in 1939, one of Batman's writers drafted a new origin story for him: when Bruce Wayne was a boy, his parents had been killed before his eyes, shot to death. Not only did Batman not own a gun; Batman hated guns. 3 Hating guns is what made him Batman. Batman's new backstory tempered his critics, but it hardly stopped them. On May 8, 1940, the Chicago Daily News declared war on comic books. "Ten million dollars of these sex-horror serials are sold every month," wrote Sterling North, the newspaper's literary editor. "Unless we want a coming generation even more ferocious than the parents present one, parents and teachers throughout America must band together to break the 'comic' magazine." Twenty-five million readers requested reprints of North's article, in which he'd called comic books "a national disgrace."4 Batman's origin story told, the death of his parents by gun, his vow, his training, and the bat flying through his window to inspire his disguise scenes from a 70s batman comic where batman beats up someone who tried to point a gun at him and then a scene from the dark knight returns where he breaks a gun in half and says: This IS THE WEAPON OF THE ENEMY. WE DO NOT NEED IT. WE WILL NOT USE IT.

Before going into it too deeply, I started gaming on the Sega Genesis (Ms Pacman, Sonic 2, 3 &K and I think a Batman game) was all I had for YEARS. I got a PS1 in the 1st grade and my first game was Crash 2 and several demo disks. I later got Crash 3, Brave Fencer, Ape Escape... (2/?)

I wasn't a huge Snyder fan, but I liked some of his movies and I mean... it's Batman and Superman, how can that go wrong?
Genuinely the only time I've had to repeatedly check my phone in the theater cus I just needed to know how long before I could leave without abandoning my friends.

Some (including mediocre writers in their own right) retroactively defend that movie and “Batman&Robin” by pointing to how one of the screenwriters would later go on to win an Oscar. To me, that doesn’t mean he didn’t write a bad movie, before that.

Batman and Robin was ludicrously awful. Not even in a fun campy way. Later the same year was a Costner film called The Postman which was just terrible. Bad writing, lazy acting. It's a wonder either was released.

I hadn't ever left before the end of a movie, nor since, but did so twice in 1997.
