The cool thing about making ambigrams is that by the point you're halfway done, you're already done

A Look at Ambigrams in Honor of John Langdon
Symmetry is nothing new to puzzle enthusiasts. After all, diagonal symmetry is one of the fundamental rules of crossword grid design. (Along with the occasional example of vertical symmetry.) Puzzl…

This is one of those ambigrams like the duck/rabbit, it could be a white flower (diagonally).

(I did see it that way at first, but it clearly that's just a mistake; they're not clever enough for it to be deliberate ambiguity)
Ukip have submitted a new logo and slogan to the Electoral Commission, swapping the £ pound sterling symbol for a cross, that looks very much like it is modelled on the Iron Cross used by Prussia & Germany 1871-1918 and Hitler's Nazi regime from 1933-45

It's like someone who doesn't understand how ambigrams work tried to do the Come in/Go away doormat.

I just heard about John Langdon’s passing last week. He’s best known for his amazing ambigrams, but was also an incredibly skilled draftsman and student of type history.

I just heard about John Langdon’s passing last week. He’s best known for his amazing ambigrams, but was also an incredibly skilled draftsman and student of type history. I got to work with him years ago on a logo project and had a blast. He was warm, funny, and so kind with his knowledge. Rest […]

On January 1, we lost a master of the ambigram (words expertly drawn so they read the same when turned upside down). In 2022, John Langdon donated his primary archive to us.

I finally got around to putting these new colorways of the Hand and Foot playing cards into mockups. Envoy the colors!

I also have full decks of these colorways available for sale if you’d like. DM me for details!

I read Gustave Berveek's comic strips and studied how ambigrams work, but above all I drew a lot with a mirror (damn! that was my secret). I used many of those drawings to create characters and backgrounds, sometimes changing the story to use them, but the main plot was already written.

Claude is refreshingly honest about this. After a few futile attempts I got this:

Apparently these are called rotational ambigrams! Google rabbit hole activated

In Houdini's Last Act, you investigate fake mediums and expose them by learning how the fakers do it then replicating their tricks. Both happen with these cards in custom-cut sleeves (hand-stamped with ambigrams) that work differently based on which way you orient them! cardboardedison.com/houdini

Today is 99 years since Houdini’s death—the one thing he couldn't escape. His career culminated with events showcasing illusions, escapes & his largely forgotten crusade exposing fake spirit mediums. Houdini's Last Act is about those events & the people who helped him! cardboardedison.com/houdini

I’m so mad this cover art isn’t an ambigram.

“He busied himself by attempting to come up with new ambigrams. Four hours later, having only achieved success with the word POOP, he crumpled the sketches and tossed them into the indifferent waters of the Seine.”

Surely a novel about the even more shadowy cabal within the church that orchestrated Opus Dei's fall through the judicious use of ambigrams.

Then who will supply my insatiable need for ambigrams?!
BREAKING: Pope Leo XIV is set to effectively disband Opus Dei in the coming weeks.

This would be the most sweeping internal reform of his pontificate — and a dramatic continuation of Pope Francis’s legacy.
NEW: Pope Leo Set To Break Up Opus Dei
If Pope Leo does indeed approves a plan that effectively dissolves Opus Dei’s structure, it would be the most significant internal action of his short pontificate to date.

I’m on my nonsense again. This week’s Six Things:

– penguins

– underground life

– how many caravans do you need in your house?

– unparliamentary language

– ambigrams

– a fun (if occasionally DEEPLY ANNOYING) word game
