NEW: Looks like CycleToronto won in court. Justice Schabas finds Ontario's law (AND version 2) to remove bike lanes infringe S7 of the Charter and is not saved by S1, in large part because the govt had no evidence to back up its claims.

The EPA cited my paper in their argument against the endangerment finding today. However, their point is completely backwards: my paper actually supports the EPA's 2009 range of 1.8C to 4C warming by 2100. www.nature.com/artic...

Bike Share Toronto has massive room to grow: average trips per bike have increased by about 30% between 2019 & 2024, while total trips have more than doubled. This means the increase in trips is mostly due to system expansion. Build more and they will come!

Very cool work analyzing building permit data from Edmonton! I recently published a preprint on using a similar approach to get a picture of housing construction-related GHG emissions (dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn...). @jacobdawang.com I'd be happy to run some numbers for Edmonton if you're interested!

Guess I need to re-up this article from last fall. Ford does not understand something essential about city roads: intersections are the bottleneck almost everywhere so bike lanes aren't hurting traffic.

The University Ave cycle tracks are state-of-the-art. Their glorious width is future-proof for our growing cycling city - safe passing space, e-bikes safely coexisting, room for everyone. Narrowing the most beautiful cycle tracks I've ever seen for an extra car lane we don't need is so sad.
Bike lane update: "Toronto's proposal includes returning two car lanes to University Avenue near the city’s hospital row, narrowing the bike lanes and removing on-street parking, said a source familiar with the plan."

Ford promised bike lane removals could happen today onward in TO (Bloor W, Yonge, & Uni). That means we’ve got to be vigilant & have our eyes open. If you see construction crews amassing to remove lanes, post/tag local cycling orgs & advocates. Send pictures. Be safe & don’t interfere.

Great read—streetcars have great potential for improving transit in the city, even if they're not new and shiny: "if we just got the streetcars working really well, it would be like adding a whole new subway’s worth of capacity: something we can do without digging expensive tunnels!"
