Can’t tell you enough how much of a good idea it is for your family to start masking again if you’ve stopped. Your kid might be healthy now. They might not be after the next Covid infection.

COVID isn’t acting like the viruses most of us grew up with, and treating it like “just a cold” is putting people at real risk. David Brasure breaks down why SARS-CoV-2 is fundamentally different, how it causes long-term damage, and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Today is World AIDS Day.

AIDS has killed 44 million people globally.

Over the years, we've learned that silence and stigma are huge contributors.

Yet, the State Department sent an email to employees stating “The US Government will not be commemorating World AIDS Day this year.”

Silence = Death

Right.

I see.

And they said disease control was expensive.

How many buildings could we have fixed with this kind of money? Hmmm?

i know it might not be immediately apparent but wearing a respirator mask while running errands is also refusing to cooperate.

fascists want folks to not protect the most vulnerable. masking is a very easy way to say “we refuse to let you weaponize a virus against our peoples”
If you feel like there’s nothing you can do to stop all of this, start by refusing to participate in fascist demands. And don’t ever justify the behaviors of people who capitulate.

They can’t do any of this without cooperation. The main thing most people need to do is just refuse that cooperation.

You won't see me in a medical setting without a mask again...unless I'm on oxygen or something. We can change our behavior when we learn more.
When you get a vaccine or a medical checkup, we expect the healthcare worker to wash their hands and wear gloves.

We should think the same about wearing masks in medical settings. Viruses can spread pre-symptomatically; masks are another effective infection control measure.

I ask you, who doesn’t want clean air?

Who doesn’t want to avoid getting sick while training?

Clean the air, protect the spaces, protect eachother.

“When I am in public spaces and see most people unmasked either because they think the virus is a hoax, that masking is virtue signaling and a sign of weakness, aren't thinking about it, or that they simply don’t care, I feel like an expendable burden not worth saving.”

but we are. & you are too.

Would you be fine catching or spreading the plague? How about some tuberculosis?

No?

Then why are you fine doing the same with covid?

Wear a respirator.
Taking this opportunity to mention that Covid is in the same laboratory biohazard safety level as tuberculosis and the plague. The difference between Covid and those two diseases is that tuberculosis and the plague have a treatment and cure. Covid does not. Prevention is key.

Additionally, N95 masks (not fit-tested but self-selected), provide you 98% protection during an exposure event.

They have a filtration efficiency that blocks 98% of particles (read virions) both ways.

They will protect you from others, and if you are sick - protect others from you.
masks are variant proof
don’t rely on that vaccine you got months… or was it a year? ago?
to match a strain that evolved after it was formulated.
prevent infection, put a filter in front of your face holes.
Wearing a mask is not “living in fear”, it’s adapting to reality.

Covid changed things. It’s a multi system vascular virus that spreads through the air.

Its killed & disabled millions.

A well fitted respirator is one of the best ways to live your life while safeguarding long term health.

I will die on the hill that to increase masking compliance it has to be made cool.

No amount of ableist and eugenicist rhetoric is going to move the needle.

People doing regular shit, high-profile shit (like red carpet events), fitness/sporting shit. That’s what is going to move the needle.

considering the lack of masks worn in day to day life. i completely agree with this.
One of my deeply held beliefs is that if we could condition people to accept how chance affects their lives, they’d be much better equipped to recognize how systemic things impact them.
We are suckers for agency when we think we can game a system, even where we can't. "I have a system to always win auctions/gambling/stock market..." No you don't, you get lucky sometimes and notice, and then keep chasing that.

Children's liberation is a skeleton key to understanding so much of the ways our society is fucked up, from misogyny to racism to classism to transphobia, and beyond, because all of these things specifically target children in unique ways. That's why it must never, ever, ever be acknowledged

Re: N95s and “perfect fits” not being scalable - I have worn a KN95 mask in public spaces since my family caught Covid for the first time in 2023, and have not had so much as a cold since.

Stop making excuses for why you don’t mask, and start preventing the year-round spread of a vascular disease.

Folks love to quote @timothysnyder.bsky.social, often "don't obey in advance" but there're further lessons—So what’s keeping you from wearing a mask? It’s easy to fall in step if there are only maskless faces around you; break the spell of denial, set the example—we must protect the health we have.

In 2020, when initial shock & fear subsided a titch & I gained some sense of control thru masking & WFH, my first impression was “finally an opportunity to change EVERYTHING for the better!” In 2025, horrified no one masks, voluntarily damaging health, no clean air, disabled discarded… I’m SO naive.
In 2020, when the pandemic of Covid-19 was declared, my first impression was, "This is the beginning of the end of everything." In 2025, with the pandemic of Covid-19 still ongoing and irreparable harm increasing everywhere, my first impression remains unchanged.

people say community requires discomfort— a drive to the airport, a listening ear when you’re tired— so why does that discomfort end when a mask is in question?
I keep encountering left-of-center folks who have confused rejecting oppression with rejecting discomfort.

You’re not being oppressed when asked to boycott, wear an n95, use alt text, unpack biases, be thoughtful with words, &c.

Discomfort & inconvenience are part of community, growth, & justice.

THIS! A naked face is not an identity unless you get it on camera, and most of the abductions have not been caught on video. A prisoner can't describe a face to a lawyer or loved one over the phone, can't write a face down on a complaint form. Reject the rightwing premise fave covering = violence.
The neck gaiters and other facial coverings worn by ICE are pulling focus partially BECAUSE of population wide stigma against masks. I am confounded by a shortage of popular emphasis on the missing NAMES and BADGE NUMBERS displayed on UNIFORMS.
PSA: There’s a difference between wearing a mask or respirator & wearing a gaiter or face covering to disguise identity. It’s important to discern & communicate this nuance because if you don’t, you might encourage elected officials to ban masks for everyone, which would be a public health disaster.

so step up: stand out, mask up, and take care take care take care for yourself & others—before those who seek to harm stop you.

I think Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissents are an important exception to the "Supreme Court dissents don't matter" rule of thumb, because she is using them not to argue with the conservative justices, but to explain to the public that the conservative justices are liars and in the tank for Trump
Ketanji Brown Jackson Is Telling the Truth About the Supreme Court
The task of interpreting the law is inherently “political.” But no justice has been this comfortable saying so in public.
