Techdirt is a legitimately excellent public service.
Hey folks: this morning we're launching a monthlong fundraiser for @techdirt.com. Over the last year, we've been steadfast in not self-censoring, not capitulating, not sanewashing bullshit. But that's come at a cost. And we need help: rtb.techdirt.com/products/fri...

the processology of the budget leak really isn't anything more than a footnote but nonetheless I want to note that it appears a reporter (who I assume is @bruceandy.bsky.social) was just spending the morning hitting refresh on a hunch they *might* at some point upload it early and I respect that

I know this is a shocking thing to say but the Herald's habit of assuming extra housing is inherently negative has me wondering if it might have some kind of editorial slant on urban issues

Years ago, my colleagues at Business Insider and I tracked YouTuber “cancellation” arcs. What we found is that for many entertainers, “cancellation” actually sets the stage for a redemption arc, one that can raise their profile higher than ever. It wasn’t career-ending. It was fuel.

This presumes quite a lot of my trust in Vance's reporting. It all just looks like the National Party having factions, which is a normal thing in many countries. Ours do too, it's just not spoken about for some reason.

Shout out to the recent upgrades to Crown St, Surry Hills. City of Sydney removed several car parks in favour of landscaped outdoor dining areas. Some were turning temporary ones from COVID permanent, others are new. It's a really great area to walk along and enjoy.

Here's some before and after:

Some of the information in this book excerpt is either distorted or flat out wrong.

According to the survey, 58% of journalists are women, not "two out of every three". The average journalist is 45.8 years old, and they are not "mostly aged in their 20s or 30s" newsroom.co.nz/2025/11/24/j...

something i'll note is that if nuzzi ran catch-and-kill ops for rfk jr and lizza knew this prior to him being appointed as HHS, and instead of telling anyone, he decided to save it for his substack long after rfk jr had made communicable disease into federal policy, that's completely fucked

This great thread makes a point I've been trying to convey for years. Calling all data-driven prediction or decision software "AI" is a huge gift to LLM hypemen, who want people to believe, incorrectly, that LLM data centers are crucial for solar forecasting or operating buildings and power grids.
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

why have reporters, politicians, influencers, etc. all of a sudden seem to have started holding lapel mics to talk into them? it’s a lapel mic, it’s specifically designed to go on your shirt or lapel, you look ridiculous holding it, stop it.

Oversight comes from a 'fresh' civilian view and helps keep policing, defence, and intelligence non-partisan. The elected official's job isn’t to echo operational culture; it's to test it against law, ethics, other obligations, and democratic consent.

One thing I don’t think current news machine does enough is offer care for those that are commenting on heated issues.

No I won’t be also wading into a chat about homophobia the same day as I’m monitoring response re: comments on transphobia.

Rather not have both mobs after me in one day.

Our city has not received our fair share in recent years across all modes. This is a central government proposal related to SH1. I'm committed to better public transport and one of the ways I'll be advocating for that is through getting a Regional Deal for Wellington.
