The reason rogue one works for a certain type of millennial fan, myself included, is that it exactly captures the vibe of a type of 90’s EU novel. Books like Wedge’s Gamble, Rebel Dawn, Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina. These are trashy novels, but they have a very particular star wars vibe.
I disagree on the grounds that Rogue One makes me, the viewer, feel feelings effectively. Is it a messy chop-job rescued in the edit that is often disjointed?

Yeah, but it works - for me, but also clearly for a lot of audiences. And that's all that matters.
rogue one is bad folks. i have believed this since i saw it in theaters and no subsequent rewatch has changed my mind. basically a chop job until the final sequence, which is good (for star wars)

ICYMI: One of the most interesting things about sci-fi is that ideas like a space elevator or an O'Neil cylinder can "exist" as discrete, almost Platonic concepts without ever taking on physical manifestation.

The folks at Heat Death very kindly gave me space to talk about the implications of that.

This week on the blog: hoplites! In particular, hoplite equipment! We talk shields, helmets, armor, weight and mobility.

Was the hoplite an over-encumbered battlefield turtle incapable of fighting outside of the phalanx? (No)

Was he actually a good skirmisher? (Also no)

the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles

Been too long since I did a big silly ancient history 🧵so let's bring an old one back over from the Bad Place:

It's time for ::air horn:: Publius Ventidius Bassus, the coolest Roman you have never heard of and the only person to walk in a triumph first as captive, then as triumphing general. 1/

Media outlets who refuse to describe in plain terms what the president did because they find it objectionable are lying to their audiences and running cover for the president. It's as simple as that.
The president of the United States posted a video of him defecating on the American people. Many in my profession normalized it. This is a big reason why we are where we are.

The largest mass protests by number of participants in US history happened yesterday and the only mention on the front page of the NYT is Jamelle Bouie's opinion column: no diner-diving for sentiments of the unheard masses, no coverage of the Trump video, no sense for what it says about the moment.

this really is all just about resentment over obama being given the prize
BARTIROMO: On your point about the Nobel Peace Prize, do you think maybe the reason Trump won't get it is because you had to get the application in before Jan. 31, and that was only 11 days into his term?

SCALISE: Look, they can play technicalities. They gave it to Obama for just getting elected.

What's happening in Chicago is not normal.

The arrest of Alderperson Fuentes is just the latest example of how far Noem and Bovino are willing to go to ignore the rule of law. We must all speak up.

I always thought they were shouting Char! As he’s the main antagonist.
I couldn't figure out what the heck "Shau!" means in the Gundam eyecatches so I searched it in English and got people saying they don't know what it means. So I searched it in Japanese instead and I got people saying they don't know what it means but in Japanese lol
