So a lot of people who have never seen silent movies might wonder how we can get so absorbed in them.

Well, the opening scenes of UP are essentially silent and people are still talking about how touching they are. That’s the power of visual storytelling

In ancient Mesopotamia, astronomers needed to know the moon’s position, even on a cloudy night.

So they made records and calculations of the moon’s positions and velocity measured in degrees. This record from Uruk or Babylon from the Seleucid period covers 248 days.

The incredible ‘Orkney Hood’ from Scotland! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

So well preserved it looks like it was woven yesterday rather than some 1,500 years ago!

It’s thought the hood was made for a child. Found in 1867 in a peat bog in St Andrews Parish, Orkney.

Osallistuminen tähän on aivan kertakaikkisen käsittämätön valinta. Suomen Puolustusvoimien edustajien paikka ei missään nimessä pidä olla vakaviin kansainvälisen oikeuden loukkauksiin syyllistyneen maan armeijan propagandaseminaarissa.

Gazan sota | Suomi lähetti upseereita Israelin asevoimien seminaariin

Everyone wants to distance themselves from the poor because it feels nice to look down and say “at least that’s not me.”

It could be any of us at any time. That’s how the system is set up. Bills and financial responsibilities don’t stop because you can’t work.

There’s no shame in admitting it.

On 29 November 1971: J.R.R. #Tolkien's wife Edith died.

He later said: "I never called Edith Lúthien – but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion. [..] But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos."
