On 19 December 2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released! Adapting the first volume of #LOTR, and being the first part of Peter Jackson's trilogy, the film captivated audiences and brought a new generation to #Tolkien.

On 19 December 1937: J.R.R. #Tolkien writes in a letter to C.A. Furth of Allen and Unwin: "I have written the first chapter of a new story about Hobbits – 'A long expected party'. A merry Christmas." This was the start of The Lord of the Rings. Merry Christmas indeed! #BookSky

On 18 December in Middle-earth: the Fellowship of the Ring is formed. Pippin was the last member to be agreed with Gandalf saying, "trust rather to their friendship than to great wisdom". The Fellowship set out a week later.
