A Mayan vase, thought to be from 500-900 CE. It is mostly light brown, with darker brown strips at the top and bottom. The middle of the image shows a cartoon-like charcoal-coloured line-drawing of two kneeling men (a student scribe on the right, and his instructor on the left) facing each other over what we can assume to be some writing. The instructor looks narked, and the scribe looks a bit dismayed!

Back when, Bill Mantlo had a habit of occasionally plagiarizing stuff in comics, under the impression that it was fine because everyone did it. But he made the mistake of plagiarizing an Ellison story in HULK, and the shit hit the fan, because Harlan actually read it.

So, I saw this yesterday. The movie is supposed to be an experment of a movie shot in one take. Or, at least, made to look like one. (You can only film for so many minutes before you have to add more film to the camera.) It’s a good movie.

I enjoyed it a lot, though story wise it’s fairly standard.

Thinking once again about this unpublished portion of my 2022 interview with Art Spiegelman. God, what I would give to go back in time and be a fly on the wall for this specific conversation between Spiegelman and Frank Miller…
They weren't actually for adults, they were for teenage boys who wanted to pretend they were adults, which is what a lot of comics has been historically. It was always that the three books were Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Maus, right? So, which one is the odd man out, first of all? Or the odd mouse out. I thought that the Frank Miller stuff that was drawn by David Mazzucchelli was really a pleasure to look at. And Miller's been very friendly, usually. But the first time we met, we just had a big argument. About what? He came over to visit and to our home, a few blocks away, and he's talking about how important heroes are. And that's not my take. That's so interesting. What did he say? He just thought that... "I need my heroes. I love heroes. Heroism is what comics are about." And I said, "What? You're reading different comic books than I am." It was during the Reagan years, and I just said something about, "Your book gives me the creeps, because it turns Batman into Reagan." And he was

“Bob had gotten to the point where he never drew anything. Never drew anything on the Batman comics, anyway. [Sheldon] Moldoff was ghosting them all and when he didn’t, someone else did. The only thing I think Bob ever drew was when we’d be out somewhere, in a restaurant or someplace, and a pretty girl would come over to him and say, ‘Are you really the man who draws Batman?’ Then he could whip out a little sketch for her, a big sketch if she was wearing something low-cut and would bend over to watch him draw. One day I’m over at his house to discuss this newspaper strip idea we had and he’s talking about who we might get to draw it. I was going to write it and we were going to get someone else to draw it. I’m not sure what Bob was going to do on it except sign his name. I said to him, ‘Bob, isn’t it disappointing to you that you don’t draw any more? You were once such a great artist.’ He wasn’t but you had to talk to Bob that way. He said, ‘Oh, no. Let me show you something.’ He took me into a little room in his house. It was his studio. I didn’t even know he still had a studio. It was all set up with easels and things and there were paintings, paintings of clowns. You know the kind. Like the ones Red Skelton used to do. Just these insipid portraits of clowns, all signed very large, ‘Bob Kane.’ He was so proud of them. He said, ‘These are the paintings that are going to make me in the world of art. Batman was a big deal in one world and these paintings will soon be in every gallery in the world.’ He thought the Louvre was going to take down the Mona Lisa to put up his clown paintings. I didn’t have the heart to tell him. So a few months later, I’m up at DC and I ran into Eddie Herron. Eddie was another writer up there and we got to talking and Bob’s name came up. Eddie said, ‘Did you hear? Bob’s getting sued by one of his ghost artists.’ I said, ‘How is that possible? Shelly Moldoff’s suing Bob? But they had a clear deal. Shelly knew he wasn’t going to get credit or anything…’ Eddie said, ‘No, not Shelly.’ Bob was being sued by the person who’d painted the clowns for him…”

I just bought this. In addition to talking about 70s and early 80s comics, I want to use this account to highlight current comics artists whose work I’m enjoying.

Most of my comics enjoyment comes from indy creators posting either here, Twitter, or Instagram. There's a lot of creativity out there.

So, I saw someone I follow post a pic with their Halloween stuff with the caption “Happy 1st Day of Halloween” and that made me think of the horror/monster comics of the 70s. Marvel had a line of b&w magazines with a monster bent. It’s where Man-Thing made his first appearance.
