My thoughts on the Take It Down Act as someone who used to handle copyright takedown (and other) requests at Google. 🧵

As many have said, this law will be used as the ultimate weapon for the Trump Admin to censor speech from their political opponents (and more).

I don't care what side of the Israel-Palestine conflict your sympathies lie on, snatching up people with a valid student visa for the crime of writing an OpEd is naked fascism and if you don't oppose this you are a threat to this country's most basic values
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

Ah yes, except that the US didn’t even include women in clinical trials until the late 1980’s and the vast majority of medical studies are still focused on the male body and use only male test subjects. Maybe it’s time we consider whether or not this is just a skill issue.

Maybe it’s time white guys settle the fuck down for a second. I’ve built my career at fortune 100 companies. Having DEI programs and teams have helped me and many others feel safer, find community, and network in corporate environments. Stop helping the far right keep it a slur.
corporate DEI was always ~90% wokewashing, though the government versions of it had more teeth. but even it it was a smokescreen, the anti-DEI movement is *also* a smokescreen for bringing back explicit white supremacy
I honestly don’t functionally disagree that a lot of DEI stuff has been annoying, pointless and some of it even actively counterproductive, I just think the backlash is several million times worse than whatever the issues were. It’s like murdering someone for chewing loudly.

DOGE is not a real department.

In order to be a real department, DOGE would have to be approved by Congress.

Pass it on.

Any news outlet reporting Mexico conceded anything to Trump to get him to delay tariffs has not done its homework.
Trump boasts he got Mexico to commit to stationing 10K troops at our border. Apparently he didn't realize Mexico already has 15K troops deployed there

All I’m saying is that we should consider bringing back 80’s style bullying
NEW: Archived tweets for Gavin Kriger, Musk's 20-something DOGE employee wreaking havoc inside USAID, shows that Kriger has retweeted multiple neo-Nazis including Nick Fuentes, leader of the so-called Groyper movement, and another popular explicit Nazi account recently unmasked by @travisbrown.dev
Gavin Kliger, Elon's DOGE hitler youth shutting down USAID, is now indirectly responsible for the deaths of thousands of children. His Instagram appears to be @gkliger. He's scrubbing his online footprint.

Here's an archived copy of Kliger's resume: web.archive.org/web/20240418...

If you cannot call it what it is when all in a week: a government removes every mention of a group of people, destroys information about them en masse, bans their discussion in schools, restricts their ability to travel and starts seizing and refusing their official identification, when will you?

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 Trump's DHS just invoked a never-before-used authority which permits the federal government to deputize any state or local law enforcement officer to have the same powers as an ICE or Border Patrol agent.

This is not some disgruntled ex-employee speaking off the record.

This is David Maraniss, a Pulitzer-winning reporter and author who’s now an associate editor at the Washington Post, where he’s been affiliated for more than 40 years.
The Washington Post editorial this morning essentially equating Biden's questionable pardons with Trump's outrageous Jan. 6 pardons was unconscionable. The newspaper I've been part of for 48 years has utterly lost its soul.

I don't find conceding the end of elections in advance particularly helpful

we're obviously in a very dangerous place but it's not a foregone conclusion that the entire system will go along with throwing out the results of the next midterm/presidential election and we shouldn't hand it to them

Latest from me, on this, the first day of the next four years. We have to resist, now more than ever. @samuelmoyn.bsky.social, Mounk, and Hamid are all completely wrong in their reading of history and their prescription for the present and near future. The stakes are too high to listen to them.
