Short answer, yes - and by a number of our politicians too.

Centralising power among a few politicians & lobbyists risks edging towards autocracy. Access to the courts is not an obstacle to progress – it is a safeguard that allows citizens to hold power to account”

100% this. The housing crisis just benefits too many landlords to put an end to it. Borders counties, and Leitrim in particular is just abandoned home after abandoned home, just waiting to be fixed up and breathed life into.

For 125 years, the preservation of the White House has functioned as an agreement between the influential and the powerful, with no accountability.

When Donald Trump demolished the East Wing, he showed once again how unconstrained the Presidency really is.
White House Architecture Was an Honor System. Trump Noticed.
For 125 years, informal norms constrained what a president could do to one of the nation’s most famous landmarks.

If you’ve broken in, and deliberately set the stairs on fire, you’re trying to prevent people (including little children) from escaping and hoping that the inhabitants burn to death.

Also, this is an attack on a state-sponsored facility. When are we going to call it - it’s terrorism?
An investigation into an arson attack at an IPAS centre in Drogheda is continuing, after gardaí confirmed a fire had been deliberately started in the building on Friday night.

This is not what someone does if they are a "concerned local".

And every "protestor" at asylum seeker accommodation is part of the road leading up to something like this being done.

Every far-right riot and protest that was tolerated, every racist dog whistle from public reps, every bit of hate and misinformation allowed to spread by social media companies, all led to this moment in Drogheda last night where someone felt emboldened enough to try to burn children alive.

If you're in the vicinity of @dculibrary.bsky.social, please pop in to see an exhibition selected from the archive material I've donated. It relates to my first book, The Destruction of Dublin (1985), and the Dublin Crisis Conference I helped to organise in February 1986. A blast from the past!
