Hot take: the EU would be pretty well served by making some kind of strategic bomber. My back of the napkin would be basically take A400M and put a new fuselage on it that can fit ~16x 2500kg / 2500km range ALCM or 32x ~1250kg / 1000km range ALCM

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Where's that quote that @djinnandtonic.bsky.social made into a poster, about fight till hell freezes over, then cut the ice and fight on? Yeah. Get me people that do that.

committing to battle and then choosing to give up is just bad practice
Our offer is you don't give us our one singular demand we've insisted on this whole time, and also we'll make it easier for your most vulnerable members to say they voted for it anyway, so they can say that when we try to attack them over it. Brilliant strategy, guys.

What I don't get is why, if they accept a promise of a vote, they are going to extend the CR further. If you are going to fund the gov in exchange for an agreement for a vote then give them the minimum amount of funding. Then when they break the deal and refuse a vote shut it back down.

yeah i think the real concessions would be anti-rescission language in an aprops bill or ACA subsidies, anti-RIF language is really good but also (1) temporary (2) not enough
Seems pretty obvious that if you were going to accept a shutdown your only acceptable outcomes ought to be an actual concession in the bill that passes or forcing them to end the filibuster

In the spirit of Blue (US) / Green (TW) unity, I support the US adoption of the Taiwanese model!
i love how the american health coverage is this essentially unholy mix of the Swiss (Obamacare), Singaporean (HSAs) and British (VA coverage) models along with Medicare/Medicaid

I know three children who would have died if they were born in 2000 rather than the late 2010s.
This is especially true for medical care. Virtually any - any - type of cancer was a death sentence. The 5y survival rate for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1960 was roughly 14%. Today it is roughly 95%.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.
