Rents in Spokane are down 12% as a result of pro-housing legislation, like removing parking minimums, incentivizing housing on former parking lots, and upzoning all residential parcels.

Rent prices are falling fast in America’s most pro-housing cities
Rental prices in some of the country's largest cities are falling—some by almost 45 percent, according to new data.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Wall Street was rescued from Trump's Covid crash in the first term by Democrats in the House and Senate loading the recovery bills with stimulus that saved the economy. They attributed it all to Trump and are shocked that he's actually a huge dumbass.

A former French military base, Vauban is a thriving neighbourhood of 5,500 residents connected to Freiburg town centre by bus and light rail. Built in the late 1990s as a radical experiment in low-car living, it forgoes virtually all on-street parking in favour of active, green, and social spaces. 🧵

Hardin highlights the costs of inaction on housing: growth is going to happen, regardless. If you’re a homeowner and you want your grown children to be able to live in your neighborhood, we need diverse housing for them.

When you fly, a larger bag being checked is charged a fee, so people opt for slightly smaller bags to avoid the fee. In Seattle, we charge anything with 4+ units an affordable housing fee so developers build slightly smaller projects to avoid it. Same policy, same outcome.

California needs to show we can deliver lower costs for people. That means simplifying the overgrown layers of government process making it hard to build things.

I’m authoring legislation as part of @buffywicks.bsky.social permitting reform package to do just that, including by simplifying CEQA. 🧵

It's remarkable that US cities generally require fire lanes 20 feet wide while the UK seems fine with (2.75-3.7 meters) 9-12 feet, roughly half as wide. This drives big differences in road design and safety.

The amusing thing about the Abundance discourse is how you have one group of people saying voters don’t need messaging around a pro-growth agenda because it’s obviously true and another group saying it’s morally wrong to be pro-growth.

It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.

Bike-lanes mean business.
