Most of my published fiction is flash fiction, but this year I published a longer story in Lake Effect 28. It’s not only my 2nd time in Lake Effect but also the second time my name appears in the table of contents with Diane Williams, whose work has been a huge inspiration. Here’s the first page:

Every day the newspaper reports and television broadcasts repeated the names and addresses of the missing, displayed their grade-school photographs, reviewed the dates and times and the uncertain order of events, and asked us to remain patient, more information would be forthcoming. Father brought Grandmother home from the airport, and she stood tall and straight just inside the door with a stack of newspapers tucked under her arm. She wore a pink cardigan over a long dress swarming with flowers. Father dropped her suitcase on the tile floor. How are my darlings? Grandmother said. She held out her arms. Come on, Father said. Give Grandma a hug. Sister and I walked across the room and leaned against her. Grandmother’s visits were rare, and we never talked on the phone, no matter how much Mother asked. Grandmother smelled like roses and mint and her wool sweater scratched my face. Who wants presents! she said.

From the police department, the boy was taken to ICE’s holding facility in Burlington on Thursday evening, where he spent a night before being transferred by car to the Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, Va., on Friday morning, his mother said. The juvenile facility is more than 500 miles away from Everett. The boy is a 7th-grader at Albert N. Parlin School in Everett, his mother said. The teen and his family, who are Brazilian nationals, have a pending asylum case and are authorized to work legally in the United States, Lattarulo said.

This is a must-see event for me. The last time I saw Amber was when she came to Suffolk to read from And I Do Not Forgive You back in March 2020, which was such a good time but just before pandemic lockdown. I’m very excited to the read the novel and celebrate its release!

This comes just as I’m finishing teaching the novel in my horror course. Lincoln highlights the very important omniscient narrator here in an illuminating way. Some students have the tendency to say “it’s all in Eleanor’s head” by the end, but the omniscient narrator says otherwise.
