Shadow Taker. A town I passed through yesterday. Hard to come up with a more enigmatic place name, or one that better suits the place, a no man's land at the corner of three different cities.

I've hit upon a great hack in Mac OS for turning any digital document into a PDF with copiable text. Take screenshots of as many pages as you like, select all the resulting files, right click, and choose the quick action to assemble PDF.

fending my way through the Kabukicho swarms on my way to a year end party. Here the sleaze of yesteryear is giving way to hollow tourist glitz. Do you want safety or soul? You can’t have both.

Having a conductor shout ALL ABOARD before a train departs is a tradition I believe is worth restoring and protecting. Together we can make it mandatory at all platforms everywhere. Vote William in 2026 wherever elections are held.

My introduction to Japan was taking an intensive Japanese course at ICU in Mitaka one summer, so walking the wooded paths of the campus to give a talk on world building last month brought back so many memories.

went to the open house for a new tourist accommodation in my neighbourhood. The owner has converted a kominka into short term lodgings. The rooms seemed spartan and overpriced, but the zen garden and the view were nice.

To start with a fresh list of media in 2026, I aim to finish off the following works by the end of the year:

The Origins of Political Order by Francis Fukuyama (audiobook)
Question Authority by Mark Kingwell (book)
Disco Elysium (game)
The Maxx (comic)

picked up a copy of this antique 1929 manga by author and artist Nio Mizushima. I'll translate the title for now as Country Bumpkinski in the Big City. It's a comedy, including one section that features a rather silly robopocalypse

I’ve made a new rule for myself that if I open my fediverse accounts I have to write something. That means either I’m going to be logging in to social media even less or firing off tons of comments and posts, either of which outcome is fine with me.

Really? A book I translated, that I have dreamed of translating for some 15 years, was released today by a good publisher, an imprint of Hachette, and no one on BlueSky cares at all? Not even a little bit?

I never watch sports or turn on videos while writing in the morning, but the Jays in game 7 of the World Series? Brings me back to childhood in Toronto when the Jays won back to back World Series

Nostalgia aside, this tournament is symbolic within the geopolitical context

To select stories for the anthology of classic Japanese sci-fi I'm editing for MIT Press, I started reading this 1971 collection of pre-WWII short stories

Today I read the 1925 short story The Man Traveling With the Brocade Portrait (押絵と旅する男) by Edogawa Ranpo

me giving my first reading in the Japanese language last week.

As part of a Kamakura Poetry Festival event held last Wednesday, I read the opening to my latest short story, Photo Bomber (「フォトボマー」), which appears in the anthology Fear and SF (恐怖とSF), published last month by Hayakawa.

the door that opens to nowhere? Oh that old thing. It's just a gateway to the sky. You step out and whoosh, the city is a toy model far beneath your feet. We painted it saffron after the hue that often spangles clouds at sunset in fall. One glance and you recall the wistful beauty of autumn twilight
