If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow.

The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

we are just as racist as america its just distributed dramatically differently (first nations receive the worst of it by a considerable margin)
one of my more conspiracy brained opinions is that “canada is lowkey just as racist as america” discourse is an attempt to manufacture consent among the left for trump’s annexation ideas

Yeah as bad as it feels and as bad as the political optics are, I kind of believe that *raising* salaries of elected officials would help remove some of the incentives around corruption and also make it more feasible for lower-income people to serve
Counterpoint: Only rich people who don't need an income would be reps. AOC would be unlikely to afford to live as a US Representative on $60k/yr. As it stands now, a lot of freshman reps struggle to afford a residence at home and in DC.

Cannot be said enough
American preeminence in science, discovery, and creativity across the disciplines was not just bc of great individual scholars or universities. It was the result of American public policy since WWII. Being destroyed before our eyes. Can’t survive without it.

moving a piece moves it for everyone, instantly. No turns. You can move between boards.

that's it. Have fun!

An interesting thread all around, but this stat in particular really stuck out to me
The shifts in public opinion also influenced voting. Running a variety of statistical tests on presidential elections from 1964 to 1972, I found counties close to nonviolent protests saw presidential Democratic vote share among whites increase 1.3-1.6%. /15
