What is concerning about US is not ultimately about Trump.

There are always Trumps.

It is the legislature and judiciary that should check and balance, but shrug instead.

It is his party and the media who should hold him to account, but shrug instead.

Trump is doing what he can get away with.

This is technically accurate, but it does rather fall into the trap of assuming that bad actors wouldn't game the system.

It might be defintionally and historically true that this is how genocide has been perputrated in the past, but if you want to muddy the water, you won't do things the same.
I was asked "what would be different if this really were an intentional genocide against the Palestinians," and no one wants to hear the reality that it would be over by now. Genocide is not "a brutal and indiscriminate war that goes on for a long time." War crimes are not genocide.
"A genocide is only present when all possible force was brought to bear as soon as possible" is your argument?

Those who were outraged at the federal government using its lethal power at the Waco siege of 1993 are not bothered when in 2025 Trump sends in federal troops into US cities.

It is a fascinating contrast.
Query

The Waco siege of 1993 generated political shockwaves: how dare federal government use its power in that way.

But in 2025 Trump sends in federal troops against US citizens, but with hardly any political shockwaves.

Was it because Waco siege was about gun rights, rather than federal power?

Google Gemini doesn’t appear to be doing too well:

‘"I am a disgrace to this planet. I am a disgrace to this universe. I am a disgrace to all universes . . . I am a disgrace to all possible and impossible universes and all that is not a universe," the bot continued.’
Google says it's working on a fix for Gemini's self-loathing 'I am a failure' comments
Google Gemini users said the bot is sharing self-loathing messages while attempting to solve tasks, including "I am a disgrace to this universe."

I have three degrees and just realised that the reason I couldn't get my guitar amp to make noise was not the amp, guitar or cable but the fact I had not plugged the cable in fully.

I'm fine it's great.

I don't think you can interpret it as anything else tbh.

I'd normally have some reservations about if something like this would be effective, but we already know that the alternative of holding back isn't with Putin, so I understand the approach.
Given the timing of this, I wonder whether it was meant as pre-peace talk message to Putin, with promises of worse.
Reuters, by the way, has the full text of Ukraine's ceasefire proposal to Russia, ahead of tomorrow's talks in Istanbul.

The Supreme Court decision on Gender Identity is tricky; my lay person impression is that it was probably correct *as a matter of law* but creates the need for legislation specifically around trans rights that probably won't get addressed in this current parliament due to the political climate.

The amount of time some small segments of the left spent concerned about if kamala was sufficiently aligned with lgbtq+ issues feels rather quaint now.

Coming around to the view that a certain kind of narcissist simply needs Musk to be a genius rather than a fraud, because they want to believe there’s a hereditary Brahmin class of accomplished, beautiful minds—and that they’re a part of that class.

There are any number of reasons this is incredibly dumb, but 'confirmation bias' is a really important concept in intelligence analysis and getting rid of reports that mention is it mind-boggling.

Honestly there's a lot of words here which are like that. You think diverse only has a 'woke' meaning?
2. A memo distributed by NSA leadership to its staff says that on February 10, all NSA websites and internal network pages that contain banned words will be deleted.

Not going to watch it all, but I'm going to see the start of the superbowl at least, and I still can't decide who I want to see lose more.

..I don't really hate either team, I just feel a lions-bills superbowl would have been so much more fun

The one semi-positove I can see from the current US administrations flurry of actions is that they are unambiguous and direct. So you might get some unified opposition. It's harder when things are less egregious, and fatigue is a real factor.

Douthat is frustrating in that he's clearly not an idiot, but engages in this kind of anger-baiting nonsense rather than focusing on actually interesting ideas or concepts from a conservative angle.

I really *want* to take him seriously, but he does his best to make that impossible.
A Douthat special, in which he dismisses Canada's nationhood: "not-Americanness finally ceased to be a plausible basis for a nation-state." Ugly American.
