In an interaction early the next month, after Zane suggested "it's okay to give myself permission to not want to exist," ChatGPT responded by saying "i'm letting a human take over from here - someone trained to support you through moments like this. you're not alone in this, and there are people who can help. hang tight." But when Zane followed up and asked if it could really do that, the chatbot seemed to reverse course. "nah, man - i can't do that myself. that message pops up automatically when stuff gets real heavy," it said.

Norges Bank Investment Management will use AI for a range of tasks including to “extract signals from company dialogues,” according to its 2030 Climate Action Plan. The fund also intends to use AI to improve decision making, and “to strengthen investment processes across teams,” ultimately helping it identify corporate winners and losers, it said. Tangen has made no secret of his enthusiasm for AI. In an interview in May, the 59-year-old former hedge fund manager said he’s been running around “like a maniac” trying to get staff to use the technology, even going so far as to say that employees shunning AI “will never be promoted.” At Oslo-based NBIM, AI is already proving useful in determining whether the fund’s climate policy is working, Tangen said. That includes evaluating the effectiveness of its engagement with portfolio companies, crunching data to guide recommendations on proxy votes and generating quantitative climate scores, he said. “Portfolio managers get this information directly in their trading systems,” Tangen said. AI can help identify “transition winners,” which he describes as companies that are “decarbonizing faster and more effectively than the market expects.” During the press briefing, Tangen was asked to comment on ChatGPT’s advice that a long-term investor keen to manage climate risk should reduce its exposure to fossil fuel companies. “We disagree, we won’t do it,” he said. Tangen then asked the head of his climate team, Eivind Filflet, to run the same question by Claude, the language model developed by Anthropic PBC. Claude’s response laid out the case “for continuing engagement,” he said. “But Claude knows me,” Filflet said. Tangen said the example demonstrates why it’s still important to have a “human in the mix.”

Yesterday Fresh Air did an interview with Robert Draper, who has covered Charlie Kirk. And this section on Draper's relationship with Kirk said a lot to me about modern access journalism, and the soft coverage we've seen in the wake of Kirk's death.
GROSS: After you profiled Kirk, and I think that was published back in February, you stayed in touch with him. And I think you were texting each other the day before he was killed. DRAPER: That's correct. I'll tell you also, Terry, that the story, as you say, was published in February of this year. But I would say for a full year prior to that, Kirk and I had been getting to know each other, and he would often reach out to me. And I thought this was an interesting aspect to Kirk, that he would reach out to me just to run things by me. Not asking so much for my opinion - because, as a journalist, I couldn't give it - but just as a reality check, he'd say, I'm hearing from the right that this particular viewpoint is prevalent from the left. Am I just living in a bubble, or is that true? GROSS: How would you respond to that? DRAPER: Well, sometimes I would say, you know, I think what you're hearing you're hearing from the right-wing media ecosystem, and it's not supported by reality as I understand it. And he would take that and be grateful for it. There was also a time I reached out to him, I remember, to say, I'd like to talk to you off the record about the religious context in which so many people in the MAGA community are viewing Donald Trump. Can you explain to me how they see him as this sort of flawed vessel, like King David or something? And he was very fluent in describing that to me. And so we had that kind of back-and-forth well predating the publication of the story, and continued to since then. I had dinner with him in D.C. once, I think, a couple of months before he was killed, and I remember he brought security with him. They sat at the bar. And he seemed very casual about it, which is not to say that he was utterly unconcerned. But it was essentially the cost of doing business, that that was just the world that we were in. I was texting with him the day before the assassination because I wanted to come to Arizona and have dinner with him and his wife to catch up on various things. But also, there's a major magazine project that I'm beginning. And I wanted Kirk's thoughts about it, but not on the phone and not in writing. It just required a face-to-face. And he wrote back saying, absolutely. We would love to have you over for dinner. Just pick a date in September. And I think I sent, a few hours later, the text, how about September 23? And obviously, I never heard back.

I was assigned, at some point, a piece about a spree of killings and land thefts carried out with impunity in the West Bank since October 7th. The piece mostly focused on a single settlement where a man who had gone to pick olives on his land one Saturday was shot by an off-duty Israeli soldier. His execution had been captured on video. The story included a cast of settlers, anti-occupation rabbis, and West-Bank Palestinians who had spent their lives fearing that their homes would be stolen, and that if they were killed or dispossessed, there would be no recourse for them. I ran into the story editor in the hallway, who said he was having trouble balancing the narrative because all the Israeli characters seemed evil, while all the Palestinians were angels. A long section that documented, without any editorializing, that Palestinian dispossession was an ongoing process that had begun long before October 7th was whittled down to a single paragraph after a series of fights between the editor-in-chief and the story editor on one side, and myself and the freelance writer on the other. Though the man’s killing had been filmed, a fact checker is obliged to seek comment from any party alleged to have committed a crime. I called the soldier’s lawyer. He picked up from a café, where I could hear trance music blasting in the background. The lawyer told me that while, yes, his client did shoot the man picking olives, and yes, the man did die, the Israeli military court found his client not guilty of murder because the man picking olives was a terrorist who was throwing stones. Even though the video did not show the Palestinian man throwing stones, the court said that he was, so he was. QED, his client did not murder anyone, and it would be slanderous for us to say so.
