genAI is STOLEN WORK. Using genAI in *any* capacity is trafficking in stolen work, supporting the plunder. Period. These facts aren't even denied by the AI companies, they just find ways to make that plunder seem benevolent. Using their product enables that lie. Stop enabling the theft of our work.
"we only use AI for coming up with ideas" no you don't. you use AI to come up with the a bland version of other people's ideas. there is currently NOBODY more replaceable than you

The New Republic wrote a hit piece on me in 2017 because I wrote this 2016 article on Trump. They now wonder why women who sounded the autocracy alarm early were mass harassed. It's because of them and rags like them.

To be clear, while the capabilities of the platforms these applications are run on have changed, and there is little doubt that the actual hardware has advanced, the actual applications deployed for things like weather modelling, or drag simulation in aeronautics, are neither new nor revolutionary.

For example, many machine learning applications in medicine (genomics, vaccine research) are not AI in the sense understood by the public. Rather, they are decades old machine leaning applications which predate the contemporary "AI moment" but have been rebranded AS AI to ride the hype wave.

Relevant to the above post is the following from Whittaker's piece:

"Tech companies quickly (re)branded machine learning and other data-dependent approaches as AI, framing them as the product of breakthrough scientific innovation...When we say AI is everywhere, this is why."

To capture funding and ride the wave of the AI bubble, a variety of institutions (commercial and otherwise) have pivoted to calling their machine learning applications "AI."

The paper I am linking below explains what's going on here. But there's also more to it than that!

It's a shell game. Trump is taking money from soldiers' housing subsidies to "give" them $1,776 "warrior dividend" checks.

More than $2.9 billion in reconciliation funds was allocated to beef up troop housing allowances. Now it’s being used for $1,776 checks.

this is a good reminder of how things that are shitty but have been accepted as normal and inevitable can actually turn out to be abnormal and evitable with some science, time, education and political will

Wow—the complaint above dated 1996 was made by Maria Farmer:
Maria has been accused over the years of fabricating her story that she had gone to the FBI. After finding the document in the trove, I called her. She broke down in tears.

It is incredibly grim how quickly you get used to seeing the "CSAM not scanned" image – each one documenting 51, 81, 100, or some other number of abusive images of children that (thankfully) haven't been digitised.

Remember how I said I have it written into my foreign-language contracts that my work has to be translated by an actual human? This shit is why.

Those book translations are gonna suck. They'll save money putting out books that are going to be painful to read. That's not a great long-term strategy.
French publishing house Harlequin decided to use AI translation instead of human translations.

All their freelance translators (some of whom had been working with Harlequin for +30y!!!) were told they would no longer receive work from Harlequin
