Beating Trump back is the overwhelming priority. But fostering people’s detachment from reality, decrying a fake crisis that we won’t be able to solve even if in power, encouraging resentful nostalgia about a great America of decades past that was taken from them - there are some obvious risks here.

I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk
Love this new report on buildings' relative fire safety from @alexhrwtz.bsky.social and Pew colleagues.

Increasing the cost new multifamily buildings leads to more people:
1) living in less safe old housing,
2) being more likely to live in greenfield single-family that is more dangerous from a fire perspective and WAY more dangerous from a vehicle miles traveled perspective, or
3) being homeless

Homeless people are not the only people who need homes.

There are tens of millions of people who would like to move out of their parents’ houses, ditch their roommates, or leave a bad home situation but can’t because our housing shortage makes rent too expensive.
There are 16 million vacant homes in the US & less than 1 million people without homes.

Pundits keep saying we need to build more housing when what we need to do is confiscate homes & apartments kept vacant by landlords & mega-corporations for short-stay rentals & artificial price manipulation.

This text is quoted accurately.

It is also a clarifying lie. Totalitarian governments know that normal people do not have time or resources to research every health, economic, or security issue.

Their project of attacking all expertise is a project of seizing trust & thus power for themselves.

I feel like a distinction you can tentatively draw with Newsom and Pritzker is that former is essentially turning Republican electoral tactics against them and the other is genuinely trying to exploit federalism the way red states have done in the last two decades

this is what I'm talking about when I say elected Dem leadership are cowards, yes, but mostly just not trained for this. Jeffries goes here every time because the politics of stunt and distraction are what he understands, not incipient fascism.
Jeffries on Trump planning a military crackdown in Chicago: "We should continue to support local law enforcement and not simply allow Donald Trump to play games with the lives of the American people as part of his effort to manufacture a crisis and create a distraction because he's deeply unpopular"

Building and fire officials and disability advocates could stand to pay attention to the same chart. Oh yeah, and a wildly disproportionate amount of everything they’re working to stop also happens in the blue part of the chart.
Policymakers should accept that the red part of this graph represents brand new, often high end housing and pursue pursue policies that bring down the price of the homes in the blue part.

Somewhere along the line, bizarrely, our society has lost the simple concept of "leaders should be held to higher standards than ordinary people"
stigma is part of how society enforces norms, and ‘don’t be yoked to the fucking gills when making policy decisions at White House’ is a fine norm to enforce. give me a break. this wasn’t someone getting buzzed on their own time and showing up to work with it still in their system but functional.

it’s extremely, extremely real and there are a crazy number of examples from recent years. it happens because both fringes rely on a conspiratorial, hallucinatory mode of anti-establishment politics with many similar targets and the only real barrier for shifting is how resistant you are to bigotry
horseshoe theory isn’t real.

it’s just a way for centrists to paint progressives as extremists.

Ethical way imo to square the circle of “institutions don’t work well unless trusted, won’t be trusted unless perceived to work well” is to make visible all of the things that the institution does do that *do* work. In a word, propaganda. Tell people that govt is why you have GPS, etc

if there's any reason democrats are losing the public opinion battle on immigration (which is debatable in the first place), it's because they've refused to build enough housing for domestic *and* international migrants
