A bus of Bronx middle schoolers pulled up to the Capitol this morning for a long-planned field trip just a few hours after the government shut down.

All Capitol tours were cancelled as the guides can’t work in shutdown.

So I escorted them in myself and gave them a personal tour. They were great!

The replies to this could be a psa for why going to college is fun and useful. Sam Altman et al go kick rocks.
What was your favorite early clas NOT in your eventual major. Mine was Ethnomusicology: an introduction to folk music.
I invariably get, "Ooh anthro that was my favorite class/cool professor" from people I meet. I tend to think soms of it is our outré material, being willing to talk "taboo" subjects in a cross-cultural context.

Ironically MY favorite class was probably Geology 101...

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

"We see hypocrisy, they see hierarchy" is, to me, the most useful way to understand contemporary conservatives. The entire *point* for them is that different rules apply to them and to us.

💜Zohran but I wish he/we would make the distinction between socialism and democratic socialism. conversations are so difficult when those two things are spoken of interchangeably. People end up with expectations that are all over the place

Michael Pham fled Vietnam at the age of 13. He was named bishop of San Diego a month ago.

Today, he stood watch at a courthouse: ICE agents were “standing there covered with masks as we walked toward the courtroom. Eventually the agents scattered and went away”

Me: It's unwise to be charmed by politicians and you should never treat them like fictional characters you root for uncynically.

Also me: What if Zohran Mamdani and Brad Lander were both mayor and had Bert & Ernie beds in Gracie Mansion?

If your candidate isn't prepared to do this right here, then they are not prepared for the fight ahead. Bottom line.

If you think your rep would stand in the way of ICE, you got a good one. If you think your rep wants to "work across the aisle" they're a Republican grifting you.
Here's a longer video of Brad Lander's detention just now inside 26 Federal Plaza as he tried to walk a man out of immigration court, by masked federal agents.

I obviously do not support LA's anti-camping ban. However, I just realized that both the federal building and the ICE detention facility are in parts of the city governed by LAMC 41.18 and right now, the LAPD has the opportunity to do the funniest thing in the history of this country.

I discussed how Trump's segregationist purge is a reaction to Obama's rise.

Too many white people lost their minds during the Obama era.

They want to destroy Black and brown (and immigrant) advancement so that one of "us" will never rule them again.

I would love to think that everyone has known for a long time that LLMs aren't going to lead to "general intelligence," but all the evidence suggests there are plenty of people who resist this, so it's good to have a paper from researchers Apple making the point strongly.
There's a lot of big news today/this week, but Apple just dropped a nuke of a paper about LLMs & LRMs, specially around "high-complexity tasks where both models experience complete collapse." This is the biggest sign yet that if AI ever lives up the hype, it won't be via those approaches:
The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Strengths and Limitations of Reasoning Models via the Lens of Problem Complexity
Recent generations of frontier language models have introduced Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) that generate detailed thinking processes…

Worth reading the letter – Newsom is noting that the powers Trump invoked last night don’t federalise the National Guard, meaning everything should be going through the governor’s office.

He explicitly says the deployment is thus unlawful. About as direct a states’ rights case as you’re gonna get.
Gov. Newsom has formally requested that the Trump admin. withdraw the National Guard.

“This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed.”
