And also, everything that’s “meant to make money” basically has an extra shareholder expense that we all pay making everything more expensive even as quality gets worse. All this just so rich people can get richer.

it has always been a long reaction to the New Deal. from then to now, capital had seen the New Deal as the sin that must be purged so that the rest of us understand our place as grist for their mills

yeah the "it is the hollow failures of neoliberalism that have lead to distrust in institutions!" thesis is just total cope because the largest predictor of distrust in institutions is not "how has this institution performed" but "has it been propagandized against by bad actors"
US institutions produced a near miraculous Covid vax in like a fifth of the previous record time, and the result was a large increase in antivax sentiment

This entire discourse feels like gaslighting. Yes antisemitism exists on the left and appears to have spiked since Oct 7. But anti-Arab and anti-Islamic prejudice ALSO EXIST and are major contributing factors to an ONGOING CAMPAIGN OF MASS MURDER.

Why is 99% of media concern aimed at the former?

Every mobster movie I've seen is the most obvious indictment against that kind of masculinity despite how men talk about them 🤕

I wrote about Vanity Fair’s gruesomely irresponsible story on Cormac McCarthy, and the feminist conundrum of how to treat women who mistake abuse for love. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Let’s be honest with ourselves: Cormac McCarthy groomed a teenage girl | Moira Donegan
The legendary American writer initiated a relationship with a homeless teenager. Don’t put a romantic spin on it

Dutifully making alt text for every picture genuinely made me a better descriptive writer. Not only is it inclusive, I can't recommend it enough for dumbass cartoon people like me who otherwise couldn't be bothered to practice their writing.

when you stop reading "believe women" as "women never lie" and see it as "one of the foundational myths of patriarchy is that women can never be trusted" it makes a lot more sense.

I wrote about a lawsuit challenging Kentucky’s total abortion ban, and what it means that desired, non-medical abortions have been sidelined in the mainstream reproductive rights movement’s post-Dobbs messaging. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
We must defend elective abortions, not just the most politically palatable cases | Moira Donegan
After Dobbs, pro-choice advocates have emphasized women in medical crises. But those tragic cases are a limited picture

The lesson that Dems learn every single time they lose (& sometimes when they win) is that “social issues” are toxic, that the electorate is fundamentally and fixedly socially conservative. But this both ignores recent history and abandons the work of politics, which is in part about changing minds.

this gets to the point i keep making. to the media elites who are obsessed with anti-wokeness, something like mass deportation is a total abstraction whereas they are annoyed, on a daily basis, by their supposedly “woke” younger colleagues and social media antagonists
Top point from @stephenkb.bsky.social on the weighting voters give to "woke" v real issues.
