I don't know if most people even realize the gun is broken, to continue the analogy. For a long time, lawmakers have waved around this figurative gun before placing it back on the shelf, unfired. Having someone try to fire the gun, and fail, could be a useful political education for a lot of people.

Yeah. It’s very important IMO to recognize—with Lithgow and other HBO adult cast members and with all these folks—that while many surely don’t conceive of themselves as transphobes in the least, trans lives don’t matter to them enough to pass on these jobs and to stand in solidarity with.

I think perhaps it's more accurate to say "it's possible THEY don't think they're transphobes"
but as culture critics I do see an importance in naming it clearly because to align oneself professionally with a very public and active transphobe is a transphobic act
