Right under Cave Story on Tigsource/TigDB's rankings page, there was Iji from around 2005, an amazingly ambitious 2d scifi shooter with an extremely involved plot and like 4 endings. And I personally think Dan Remar needs some of this recognition too if we're talking about indies.
I'll put it here since I said it to other people like 3 times, but the reason I go for Edmund over Pixel is Edmund was part of the scene, even if Pixel in a sense created it.

If you prioritize privacy, Vanishing Gungaroo is a really solid option.
“try water fox or ice weasel” try chill penguin. install flame mammoth. you just download bubble crab. literally just use boomer kuwanger. sting chameleon has a search bar, use it to find toxic seahorse.
I asked what I should use instead of firefox and someone said “floorp” and I legitimately thought it was a bit for like five minutes. tech has gone beyond making the torment nexus real to making poob real.
