Almost every line of this story would have been simply unbelievable a few months ago:

—Pioneering cancer researcher;
—*Arrested* at airport in Boston;
—Now indefinite ICE detention in Louisiana;
—"Crime": not declaring some frog-embryo samples for research.

Read it.

New images could change cancer diagnostics, but ICE detained the Harvard scientist who analyzes them
Without scientist Kseniia Petrova’s expertise, no one can fully unlock the data’s potential, putting crucial advancements in early cancer detection at risk.

Every single Democratic governor and attorney general needs to do this -- if only to make it clear to voters *right now* that the firings and funding freezes that are about to hurt their states badly are the work of Trump-Musk in Washington.

Get ahead of this now, or get blamed for it later.
Arizona AG Kris Mayes, New Mexico AG Raul Torrez, and Oregon AG Dan Rayfield will begin holding Community Impact Hearings — a national series of townhalls "to hear from the public about the impact of federal firings and DOGE funding freezes across the country."

The first will be in Phoenix March 5.

The biggest superpower in a autocracy are saying the words "no, I won't comply."

We outnumber them. Autocrats require constant effort to maintain control. Forcing them to expend effort to enforce compliance is our asymmetrical advantage.

I am once again asking you to consider that an entire information ecosystem established as the primary form of communication over a hundred years and allegedly regulated by the federal government was destroyed by scammers virtually overnight and we just don’t, like, ever talk about it
The first rule of avoiding scam calls is to never answer unknown numbers, and even some known ones.

Curious? Bored? Worried it’s an emergency? Wait the extra minute it takes for the call to go to voice mail, then decide if it’s legitimate.
Sick of scams? Stop answering your phone.
Phone scams are still hugely popular — and they depend entirely on people curious enough to answer.

New: After observing the campus protests for the past week or so, one thing is clear—the only rioters are the cops and the administrators.

I wrote about their fear of student power: www.thehandbasket.co/p/cops-colle...

I try to remember that whenever we talk about how much of a fucked up horror show the world is, what we mean is that the world is full of good people being wronged and beauty being destroyed, that we risk losing all of it—not a denial of the good in the world but its affirmation.

So so so much of the panic around trans kids is centered in the fact that parents struggle with recognizing their kid has an interior life. It denies trans kids the closet and autonomy, and positions "reality" as "things are only real when I am made aware of them" which is fundamentally selfish.
"ROGD" is a parent flipping out when their queer child (of any age, truly) finally got up enough nerve to tell them they're queer.

That's all it is.
So for the parents, who've been thus far oblivious, it appears rapid.
And these parents have always assumed their child is an empty vessel.
The original study on "rapid onset gender dysphoria" — a bunk concept based exclusively on the accounts of transphobic parents — is some of the most blatant moral-panic research I've ever seen.

Every hobby decays into becoming a meta-hobby of just buying the shit involved in doing that hobby. It's a lot easier than using that stuff, after all, and gives the exact same sense of accomplishment.
