Sir Terry Pratchett is best understood as one of the most interesting, deeply ethical practical (I would say Pragmatist but I cede to actual experts) philosophers of the late 20th Century who just happened to work in deconstructed fantasy literature as his medium.

If "AI" was as valuable as they say it is, they wouldn't be selling it to you. They'd be using it themselves in secret to make the next Minecraft, the next Avatar, the next Hello Kitty and then they'd sell that to you.

They're trying to sell you a sick goose, while pretending it lays golden eggs.

Is there a way we can frame addressing climate change as bullying the environment? 🤔
It enrages them to encounter something they can't bully.

an achievable short-term goal for police reform, I think, would be the passing of state laws that say that if you're canned from one law enforcement body for misconduct you can't be hired at another law enforcement body.

The sheer number of times someone has told me "AI doesn't work for my field because of [specialized knowledge], but I can see how it's useful in other fields."
I think people have a kind of Gell-Mann amnesia towards LLMs — like, they can think "AI is bad at things I am good at and know about, but good at things I can't judge because I'm bad at them"

Tech bros think AI is good at everything, including coding, and that's because they are also bad at coding

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

Canada should now do what many have suggested to hit back against the US with non-tariff measures: jailbreak all American tech and stop enforcing US copyright in Canada.

I have a theory that the thing talked about in this AI thread is why you can learn languages amazingly as a child but not as an adult -- when you learn your first language you're not learning the language, you're just *learning*.
One of the most common arguments you hear from fans of generative ‘AI’ is that it’s not plagiarizing people’s work, it’s just learning like a human learns. So I’m going to break down why that’s just not true, and why it can never be true, with the existing systems. 1/
