most people come home from Japan thinking “I wish we had their high speed trains” or whatever.

Me? I want Japan’s approach to rating things on Google Maps. 3/5 = fine, 3.5 = pretty good, 4 = exceptional.

Instead we’ve got the American “everything is awesome” style, where <5 stars is an insult

I am curious to hear people's perspectives on the benefits of a PhD (vs MPhil) for applied biostatistics careers (especially in Aus, but all perspectives welcome):
- any career success stories from non-PhD-havers?
- any non-PhD-havers find their careers stalled without one?
update on PhD situation: have been pursuing the option of changing supervisors but I seem to be bureaucratically trapped and that may not be possible. meanwhile taking the Masters option is not the end of the world, possibly a better financial choice anyway

Does typing code and writing reports count as “something with your hands”?
From @posit.co 's coffee chat this morning: @hadley.nz is "80% confident" that it's still a good idea to learn data science coding. But recommends you also know how to do something with your hands.
