Question: For a CompLing course that's includes intro-to-programming, I'm asking them to write a function (without regex) that returns True if a string is a^nb, False otherwise. Is that... too challenging?

Chomsky on Foucault: “I'd never met anyone who was so totally amoral”

I guess Foucault didn’t retain that distinction forever

i’d rant about the priority given to clearing snow from car infrastructure… except it seems like the city has also sort of given up on that?

niche content: in BG3 multiplayer in the Grymforge, if one of you is in dialog with the escaped iron hand gnome, and the other tries to sneak around to steal the smoke powder, it *will* bork the game logic

I followed an academic on TikTok who I don't know, but who was making academic related videos. Recently, I looked at my TT dms tab, which I only use for messaging strange videos to my sister, and saw that this academic was in my chat history. Confused, I opened the chat

has there been work on how simple use of a proper name presupposes a common acquaintance, while possession presupposes non-common acquaintance?

while talking with siblings about whether we can wink or wiggle our eyebrows, my mother said we just need to practice, cause when she was a kid she sat in front of a mirror practicing winking, learning to isolate the muscles, holding one eye shut and so forth.

it works the same way in the US: things i like and am comfortable with are just normal, things i don’t like and make me uncomfortable are political
Supporting LGBT+ rights is political in a way that breaches the civil service code and opposing them is not political in a way that precludes charitable status is a... complex position to hold, although one managed by former LGBA hate group with charitable status trustee Kathleen Stock.

my little spiel to early-on graduate students who are anxious how to get a good idea is that first, something has to bother you. and nothing is more bothersome than an absence or a vacancy
I'm preaching to the choir here, but I read articles to find what's not being said and where I need to keep digging. And that's something a generated summary cannot provide.
FWIW, the jury is still out on Gen AI being good at text summaries. Because it shortens & emphasizes text based on distribution, not meaning, it’s less of a summary (ie, salient points highlighted) than a compression (ie, the most frequently asserted terms in the distribution). Not the same thing!
