Lesson one: Yes, you can do a lot of things if you break the law.
Lesson two: Doing something is not the same as doing a good thing - it is harder to build than it is to destroy.
Trump has built nothing like the TVA. His lawbreaking is not "freeing the stuck wheels of bureaucracy."

Someone should write a Moynihan report on our elite class, explaining that their problems are not socioeconomic but the product of a pathological ghetto culture.

Tonight's real lesson for everyone on the internet is that if only the Democrats nominated your preferred candidate every time, they will always win. This is true left, liberal, and centrist.

Political violence is bad because civil conflict is absolutely fucking terrible for everyone. It empowers the worst people within a society and feeds into endless cycles of escalating violence that get harder and harder to stop.

The lies' laughable implausibility is a feature, not a bug.

They're not trying to convince discerning, skeptical, fact-based people. They're trying to give supporters a fantasy that validates their feelings and creates a sort of loyalty test, while flaunting the absurdity in everyone else's faces.

My takeaway from former Fox News heads and commentators now in government is that they are lazy as shit and have no idea that normal people work for many consecutive hours in a day
Jeanine Pirro: First of all, I miss Fox. I love everybody.

Government is hard. I work at least 12 hours a day. You have to pay for water. Let me tell you, they waste millions.

This is also why I think all the people saying men need their own spaces to solve the young men skewering Republican are wrong. They need more exposure to women, lot less. Too few of them think you can have platonic female friends and that by itself is demeaning to women
I think the most intractable form of bigotry might be misogyny solely because we have a lot do studies that suggest that when dominant populations (read: straight white males) are heavily exposed to people who are different from them they become less biased — with one exception
I would say this is a Streisand Effect thing except that it IS A BIG DEAL that the President is a rapist (proven by a court but weirdly media run mostly by male leadership seems to treat like a sideshow) but this also seems like evidence that he’s a PEDOPHILE is being withheld

one of the stranger phenomena in American life is that hate is supposed to flow in one direction (rural people get to hate urban people, Republicans get to hate Democrats) and if the hate goes the other way people pretend as if this is very upsetting.
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

I really really needed to see that people hadn't given up and accepted this shit as inevitable, or (even worse) embraced it.

And today showed us that beautifully.

It’s not about agreement, it’s about assessing arguments on the evidence. A huge percentage of ‘debates’ in American politics are between people who are roughly aligned with reality and people who are not. Journalists shouldn’t shy away from pointing out when this is the case.

This is a good example of how framing is a choice. The author, Jeremy Peters, frames the story around the protagonist, rather than the university employees he spammed with DOGE-style questions about what they did, and who he recommended should be fired based on crappy AI.

Nothing lasts or develops or evolves in an organic way. It's invented, exploited, & "over" in the space of weeks, days, even hours. The endless production of shallow novelty becomes, in itself, tired & familiar. It starts to seem impossible for anything to be genuinely different, new, *meaningful*.

All this, just to pay for Trump's tax cuts for wealthier Americans.

It is weird as a health policy researcher to try to understand the high-level health policy goals of the moment and not being able to come up with anything other than "tax cuts for the wealthy."
“We’re gonna cut Medicaid, but no one will lose Medicaid as long as states spend more to make up for our cuts - so it’s not really a cut” appears to be the new GOP line.

It’s ofc bullshit - but also some states have automatic rollbacks of their Medicaid expansion if the federal match decreases.
Austin Scott previews how House Rs plan to cut Medicaid: "The federal govt is paying 90% of the Medicaid expansion. What we've talked about is moving that 90% level of the expansion back... nobody would be kicked off Medicaid as long as governors decided they wanted to continue to fund the program"
