Remember: The richest 1% evade over $160 billion in taxes every year.

That amount would fund SNAP for a year with money to spare.

Ask yourself who the real freeloaders are.

I’m not sure I like how this matter has been couched. I’d appeal to the chair for a change in the record, but I’ve been told that the use of the word “thanking” has cushioned the blow. Tabling any further discussion offers some armoire against possible repercussions.

"The reason why this is of concern, is—he's the president of the United States, he's been found in another case by a civil jury to have been liable for sexually abusing a woman in a department store, he's a convicted felon, and he's had dozens of women accuse him of sexual abuse."

Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

Thread.

A damn good one.
More than anything else, powerful men - like the ones who run the NYT - believe in the legitimacy of power itself. Because if it isn’t legitimate, they have to start asking hard questions about the world and themselves.

Ooodles of testosterone on that stage but I'm always struck at the effortless-seeming grace of Willie Nelson's vocals.

At the same time the NY Times was hyping Hillary Clinton's emails, it had a reporter with emails from Jeffrey Epstein that were highly damaging to Trump.

The more NYT apologists try to minimize this the clearer it becomes that they don't understand why much of the public doesn't trust legacy media.

Concur.

Police in a healthy society/polity are not a military/paramilitary force. They are a branch of the civil power, and their authority ultimately rests (or should) on the consent of the governed/policed.

When the police become occupiers, nothing good happens.
I simply refuse to accept that police ever have to look like this. this is just pure cosplay. it should be illegal for cops to be dressed like soldiers going to war.

Meanwhile, here's an example of the horrendous things found in Hillary Clinton's emails—the only story worth covering for any serious news outlet in 2016, apparently.

This email is also regarding a child who suffered abuse from a grown man.

A quick re-up of something I posted yesterday. As A Pox on Fools enters the final stretch I finally have the brain space to do some more ephemeral writing. A first fruit: a brief essay on the implications of Canada's loss of measles elimination status.

This just came up in a conversation elsewhere on here, but it struck me…

The US would be a better place if every high school student read JBS Haldane’s On Being the Right Size.

It’s so rich in lessons, from its gentle reveal of the power of quantitative thinking to the craft insights to be gained.

to add to Lyz's point: some of the most hardcore Trumpers I talked to also loved Bernie.

it's not about liking Trump's policies. it's about giving a "f you" to the system shitting on them, which is exactly what socialism does in this moment.

Getting annoyed listening to charter school activists lie again and again that charter schools are public schools.

They are not.

They are publicly funded private schools that siphon money away from public schools and produce no better results.

New post on the implications of Canada's loss of measles elimination status up at Inverse Square.

Which is to say that having submitted my copy-edited MS for A Pox on Fools, I'm back to writing short form about the stuff in that book and anything else that bugs/enrages/amuses me.

True, but meanwhile, note how completely Mamdani's campaign a) got under Trump's skin and b) has shifted the political conversation.
Having an inarticulate man who has never been in a grocery store give an inaccurate speech to people who are in grocery stores all the time that is full of easily disproven lies about how grocery prices are going down isn't a winning "affordability" strategy.
