Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

One Monday, I was riding the escalator up to my office and I see a bunch of big scruffy guys on our floor. It was Mike Alstott and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense. I say “excuse me guys” and they part to let me pass. I glanced back and saw Warren Sapp leading the defense down the hall.

Merkley had a pretty effective day.

Or will have, if you make this go viral.
MERKLEY: How do you feel about being responsible for hundreds of thousands of kids dying because of your sudden interruption in these key programs?

VOUGHT: I reject the assertion

MERKLEY: I find your response both ignorant & callous. Few Americans have had a more devastating & disastrous impact

This thread will dive into its activity.

The thing that worked with my “COVID isn’t real” coworker was not empathy. It was saying, “My buddy the funeral director is working 16 hours days, seven days a week. Let’s call him right now and you can tell him COVID is not as bad as the common cold.”
I think this comes from a good place but I disagree. A common thread in deradicalization stories is stigma: Once people start losing friends and jobs they reconsider their beliefs.

Obviously you should try to be nice to people but you also need to draw a line where you won’t engage anymore.

Walking out of Costco at 10:15 on Saturday morning and there’s this teeny girl riding in a cart (like not even three-year-old size). She’s making her case calmly while pointing at the food court, “Dad, what about hot dog? It’s quick. We get one for mom, too.”
That kid’s going places.

My parents live 1/3 of the year in Arizona and most of their neighbors are Canadian part-time residents. Nearly all of them are not planning on coming back to the U.S. next year. That could be catastrophic for Arizona’s economy.
Canadian travel to the US is absolutely cratering.
