when people say "you have to do it like MLK did", there's a lot of history getting washed out in that BS platitude but a big one is how different the media environment was and how that impacts tactics. the 60s have

1. far, FAR, more newspapers, magazines and
2. far *less* TV channels.

It's also not true. White maternal death rates are also not great when compared to other countries. The downside of using the people you systematically opress as your benchmark is you fail to recognize how your own policies are killing you.
They are who we think they are

Watching The Agency with my husband who hasn't seen the French original. Biting my lip over a certain early plot about Syria and Assad.

Reminds me of when a similar thing happened in Homeland and was reflected in Jordan in real life.

Sometimes these shows are documentaries.

“An internal assessment of a machine-learning programme used to vet thousands of claims for universal credit payments across England found it incorrectly selected people from some groups more than others when recommending whom to investigate for possible fraud.”

This has become an area of academic research, that people often mistake the profound discomfort of visible poverty with risk of violent danger
People "Feel Unsafe" Because Visible Poverty Is Everywhere
Media hysteria around “rising crime” works because it touches on something real: a palpable increase in visible human suffering. What matters is how we alleviate that suffering.

I get the political calculation here. I'm just gonna point out that the predominance of research into European parties' efforts to outflank the far right like this has found that they merely legitimised the far right's political framing and led voters to opt for the "full fat" version.

The best insult, which I also still receive on a daily basis:
Being realistic has never changed the world. It was the dreamers and progressives who changed the unjust conditions. There are great role models from Martin Luther King to the suffragettes. <3

It reveals that Starmer is terrified of the media, and Farage isn't. It reveals that Starmer knows he will always be attacked, Farage knows he never will.
to be fair to the Times, it dug up James McMurdock's conviction for repeatedly kicking his girlfriend as well as the Lou Haigh story. Obviously I think one is far worse than the other, so what's revealing is how the respective party leaders have reacted.

A lot of folks are giving up in advance. Capitulating before a single skirmish.

Well, not this old warrior. I’ve seen much worse from the U.S. government in my day. I’m concerned for our country, but not a bit scared of these miscreants. I’m ready to do my part.

Who’s with me?
