You've been hit by a car and you're fading in and out. You ask the EMTs to price the ambulance ride. You get to the ER and tell the docs you'll need a price on each service before it's done. You get cancer so it's time to put treament out to competitive bid. I can keep going...
Roger Marshall: "We want patients to become consumers again. We want patients to see what the actual prices are. We believe that if we would add the price tags to this bill, that it would save the country a trillion dollars a year."

MINNEAPOLIS: “All I did was step outside as a Somali American citizen, and I got chased by a masked person, assaulted, kidnapped. It was inhumane. If this is what’s happening to a 🇺🇸 citizen on camera, imagine what could happen to your loved ones.”

ICE being evil enough they start angering famously racist police departments was really not a turn I was expecting
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara to US citizen detained by ICE: "I apologize that this happened to you in my city with people wearing vests that say 'police.' That's embarrassing."

It's fine to be skeptical of this, but some folks don't understand what this information means.

It may sound silly, but oceanic freedom of navigation is predicated on "flying the flag of a sovereign state." Any ship caught flying false colors can be legally fucked with by any state's navy.

ICE detain U.S. citizen for looking Somali—use illegal chokehold to tackle him to ground.

Man repeatedly begs agents to look at his digital passport ID—they refuse.

Drove him 7 miles away before releasing him alone into Minnesota snow storm—told him to "walk home" in freezing weather advisory.

Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.

Given how many new books I read in 2025 (very very very few), it is a mystery why I go through End Of Year Book Lists and save so many titles to Goodreads. And yet

@bleary.off-the-records.com I have a music question: Is there a term for what Randy Newman does? What I mean is the kind of song writing where it's like he's writing for a musical that doesn't exist? In-character, I guess.

I'll say again: we are oddly selective about the government services about which we will say, they operate at a loss.

We say Amtrak and the post office "lose money" but we never say highways, the court system, the Pentagon, etc lose money
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

Woolly mammoths have two sets of tusks that grow continuously throughout life, about 6 inches per year. They have growth rings that are similar in appearance to growth rings of a tree. The rings can also be used to reveal which month the animal died.
