Ebooks are reading.

Audiobooks are reading.

Graphic novels are reading.

Pulp reading is reading.

Adults reading YA is reading.

It's all good, my friends. Don't let anyone tell you different.

I'm entirely serious about this: until you internalize the view that urban America is Real America, you won't see the urgency of structural reform of an American government whose fundamental structures so disadvantage its population centers—the great engines of its prosperity, progress, & culture.
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not
And I think liberals should stop taking the bait and ceding ground on immigration.

Immigration is good. Multiculturalism is good. Free trade is good. Stop being embarrassed to say so.

People Who Drink Bottled Water on a Daily Basis Ingest 90,000 More Microplastic Particles Each Year

I don't know who needs to hear this, but opposing GenAI is not about opposing technology, it's about opposing capitalists.

GenAI is not a technology: it's a massive automation of theft, masquerading as an industry, run by grifters.

Don't hate computers, hate the capitalists behind the curtain.

I have been warning for years that once insurance companies had a reason to stop denying hormones to trans folks, they’d be coming for the menopausal among us next. We all rise or fall together.
My insurance company just sent me a letter saying they will stop covering two of my prescriptions because they are ‘not medically necessary’. Which ones?
1. My testosterone, because I am not a man
2. My menopause meds for hot flashes because, after all, women should just deal with it.

I wish the legacy media would talk about the fact that almost no one under 40 can buy a house, insurance premiums are set to skyrocket, and most Americans are living from paycheck to paycheck instead of *checks notes* the finer feelings of billionaires.

Hey did you know comic books imposed self-censorship to avoid government intervention so for like thirty years Superman comics stopped being about punching bad guys and instead he’d be like IF I DON’T EAT ALL THESE PIES JIMMY WILL TURN INTO A CLOCK!

Conventions, if you use AI do not be surprised if creators turn down your invitations to be guests or even to be on panels.

Do not use tools trained on stolen work from creators and then tell them you want to honor or uplift them - that’s not what you’re doing. You’re stealing and being lazy.

As Hannah Arendt put it: "The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists." Undermining that distinction will be a lasting legacy of generative AI.

It’s rare to come across a heartwarming story about disability that avoids falling into the “disability porn” trap.

This one doesn’t even toe the line. Just a genuinely heartwarming (and heartbreaking) story about community care:

hard to overstate how bad this is for discrimination against everyone but white people.

I'm saying we are undergoing a wholesale revision of equal protection and anti-discrimination law so that it only protects white people.

Let me explain:
This makes facially neutral policies--like poll taxes and literacy tests--that we know were adopted for discriminatory purposes legal. Organizations can now simply claim there was no discriminatory intent regardless of outcome. It's unconstrained institutionalized racism.
They're just taking an ax to the Civil Rights Act

I feel like "academic hiring" discourse is always kind of downstream of the fact that in the 50s we started building a giant public system to make a college education almost universally available and in the 80s and 90s we started taking it apart to go back to the only-the-rich model

I have ideas like…every thirty seconds. Most of them suck. But many of them have been scaffolding for ideas I am actively trying to come up with, and a computer cannot give you that, no matter how much of other artists’ blood sweat and tears you feed it.

Never. There is no good use for genAI.
