Sorry to be a boring academic, but dissonance reduction techniques including projection & rationalization are not new or unique to Trump voters, even if consequences might be esp. grave. Studies in the 1940s showed some voters wrongly projected their preferences onto the party they happened to back.
Trump and his entourage want fo claim a mandate for the most extreme elements of their agenda. But a lot of people who voted for Trump were delusional about what that agenda actually is, and voted for him believing he wouldn’t do those things. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

Billionaires owning newsrooms (even if you like the person) is part of the problem!

I don’t know the literature, but do historians of fascism talk about the role played by media sources who thought “it would be indecorous to talk about what is actually happening”?

one downside of building tools like this is that it shifts the economic incentives away from verification of the network data

there’s a nod to this about “some projects it is probably not the right tool for”, but if it’s easier and cheaper to not verify people won’t

lol at tagging Brick Suit, the man who famously shows up at every Trump rally wearing a suit with a brick print on it, on this one. Brick Suit is going to marshal all the resources at his command, and liaise with Dan Bongino if necessary, to find out why the Trump campaign did something thoughtless.
