The University of Texas-Austin is beginning a process to eliminate the Black Studies, Latino Studies, and Gender Studies departments in the College of Liberal Arts. This is a grave threat to the educational liberty of students, faculty, staff, and the people of Texas. 1/

UNTIL IT'S DONE, Ep. 2

When the Brownsville Clinic opened in 1916, it was the first birth control center in America. Its very existence felt impossible. For young women, it was a lifeline.

109 years later, the Clinic is long closed—but Brownsville mothers are still struggling.

I am genuinely shocked at this, this is such blatant manipulation of the data for ideological purposes, and I would have thought that the @economist.com would be above that, or at least competent at doing it.

This is *stunningly* disingenuous, and the fact that Singal continues to enjoy a career writing at the highest levels about a topic that he either unwilling or incapable of discussing honestly is such an indictment of the Anglo-American prestige media.

Just a thought: Even if it’s people who shoot people and not guns. Shooting someone without a gun is a lot harder. Not impossible, but harder, a lot harder

That opinion piece is an amazing display of class solidarity. Also, it is possible to condemn murder without laundering fascist positions into acceptable debatable political differences.
“Kirk & I were on different sides of most political arguments. We were on the same side of the continued possibility of American politics.”

So it’s personal? B/c if you were a Black woman or transgender, Kirk would not imagine you having any role in the future of American politics.

It’s very easy, in these moments, to see who has never had their right to exist peacefully in society on the ballot.

The killing of Kirk is horrible. That’s it. Nothing about the way he practiced politics was good.

We have been taught that far right political violence is just an acceptable, if not desirable, part of life. We’ve learned to accept so much.

What we refuse to accept from the liberal side of the spectrum should wake us up to what we’ve accepted from the other side.
These are calls for mass political violence, against all Democrats. They openly call for the bombing of "Democrat" cities and for the jailing or killing of Democratic politicians. They are from some of the most influential voices in right-wing politics. Will anyone say anything?

The professor now under investigation for teaching what they were hired. This is *exactly* the kind of local, voluntary enforcement from below that makes it really, really difficult to try to say what the operative differences might be to the Nazis’ consolidation of power in 1930s Germany
Student, to professor: "I'm not entirely sure this is legal to be teaching, because according to our president there's only two genders... and I don't want to promote something that is against our president's laws as well as against my religious beliefs" www.kbtx.com/2025/09/09/a...

If *your department head and your dean* can be removed for supporting your colleague in teaching in their area of expertise, then you have no academic freedom. In a functional sense, you don't work at a university at all.
Faculty in red states are being punished for failing to signal in their course descriptions that their classes will include content on "gender ideology."

Remind me again which party was appalled by idea of "trigger warnings"?

“Against our president’s laws”??? — since when does the president make laws???

When I took the citizenship test, it was still the legislature and only the legislature that made law. Prez signs or vetoes. That’s it

This reads like a literal police state: no civilian can govern without support of the police.

That is not remotely how it should be.

But the fact that this is treated as just “how things are” reflects our entrenched view of the police as a baronial class.
This is such a terrible and anti-democratic idea. The mayor of NYC should not need the support of the NYPD. There are pragmatic reasons why the mayor needs to have a working relationship with the police, but the NYPD doesn't get a veto over what voters want. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/08/n...

Another case in which a grand jury voted "no true bill," and Jeanine Pirro defies them by recharging the case as a misdemeanor which doesn't require grand jury approval. This is totalitarianism in action, the sort of stuff that provoked the American revolution.
Lawyers for a man charged with assaulting a D.C. police officer say he can't face a federal assault charge because the officer wasn't assisting federal agents Trump deployed to D.C. but rather those agents were assisting him.

COVID killed at least 1.1 million people in the US (likely an undercount).

COVID vaccines saved at least 3.2 million lives in the US in the first two years alone.

Completely unacceptable RFK Jr is restricting vaccine access when he clearly has no idea how COVID or vaccines work.
Warner: "Secretary of Health and Human Service -- he doesn't know how many people died from covid, doesn't know if the vaccine saved lives, doesn't understand the issue that OBGYN doctors are fleeing rural America ... "
