We are line straddlers.
thoroughly enjoyed as it straddled the line between playfulness and seriousness beautifully - melville would be delighted

especially the absolutely HILARIOUS bit of discussing the biblical reference of ishmael, joking about god listening, w/o mentioning that ishmael is translated as "god hears" 💀

I have received three pieces of feedback from the first episode of The Whale Pod: one is from my mam, and both the other two feature detailed fantasies about having sex with a whale. One of them was in heroic couplets

It's been barely two days since we released the first episode and already more than one person has come forward to share they have long held a secret desire to copulate with a cetacean.

Not sure what that tells you about this podcast.

I'll be banging on about this for ages.

This week I launched a brand new podcast with @pdkmitchell.bsky.social which is all about Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

People have said very kind things about the first episode.

Give it a listen if you want to learn and/or hear people taking the piss.

It's not a lie when I say I've never read a work of fiction.

I wanted to fix that by reading the biggest book I could find.

And because I'm a man it's impossible to do something without it being a podcast.

The thing about Moby-Dick is that all of American modernity is prefigured in it. The Civil War, Jim Crow, civil rights, BLM? In Moby-Dick. The Manhattan Project, the cold war? Yep, Moby-Dick. Trump, the battle of Minneapolis, the Epstein files? Baby you'd better believe that shit is in Moby-Dick
