I thought this was a blast! A patchwork profile of a city via several short stories & genres (including a graphic novel chapter) & populated by vividly drawn disparate characters 📕 🇯🇵 🐈‍⬛
Now reading. I loved Bradley's translation of Natsume Sōseki's I am a Cat, which was recommended by @kirkdalebooks.bsky.social, so I'm giving his Sōseki-inspired collection of inter-connected short stories a shot. 🐈‍⬛⛩️

What a headline, an amazing summary

Paolo Sorrentino reins in the stylistic flourishes for La Grazia, a lowkey & elegiac study of acceptance, regrets forgiveness &, yes, grace, as a widowed Italian president, nearing the end of his tenure, deliberates over his final acts. Toni Servillo wry & authoritative as central character

Josh O’Connor & Paul Mescal exhibit a potent chemistry as colleagues & lovers touring America & recording folk songs & experiences of fellow Americans during WWI in romantic drama The History of Sound, but picture feels maudlin & underpowered when they are apart

One for fans of Seichô Matsumoto’s excellent mystery TOKYO EXPRESS.

You can watch the 1958 film adaptation, TEN TO SEN / POINTS AND LINES, here - with English subtitles.

This Rarefilmm website is excellent, btw, full of great films that can be streamed for free.

François Ozon's adaptation of Camus 'The Stranger' announces its High Seriousness with its crisp Bergmanesque black & white photography & stately pacing. It's exceptionally well-acted though, as well as surprisingly faithful, save for a whiff of homoeroticism & more fleshed out female characters
