This is an extremely interesting, and useful, result. We (all?) know that to properly use an AI coding tool you have to carefully check the code it produces, and that this takes time. Now we start having some hard data on the fact that the trade-off is not necessarily positive.
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.
The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
