Just a reminder that Trump had his attorney general preempt the Mueller Report with a self-serving “summary” and the media ran with it and it defined everything that came after.

Something to remember as we wait for a probably doctored and scrubbed “Epstein Files” report.

“Every media era gets the fabulists it deserves. If…late 20th century fakers were looking for the prestige and power that came with journalism in that moment, then this generation’s internet scammers are scavenging in the wreckage of a degraded media environment.“

👀
A few months ago @thelocal.to got a promising pitch from a writer with bylines in whole bunch of reputable publications—The Cut, The Guardian, Dwell, Architectural Digest, etc. Then I started investigating. Here's a story about fabulists in journalism's AI slop era. thelocal.to/investigatin...
Investigating a Possible Scammer in Journalism’s AI Era | The Local
A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

Thread. “AI is patching up the holes in conspiracy theories and so making them seem more reasonable, making them easier to spread and more resilient to collapse” was not on my bingo card.

AI relieves the pressure of cognitive dissonance. That’s … not great.
Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.

Classic NY Times: powerless underage victim is actually the scheming perp; much-older member of the US Congress is actually a passive victim
A teenager in Florida with a homeless parent wanted money for braces and ended up having sex for money with powerful men, setting off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of Representative Matt Gaetz. nyti.ms/49PSkL9

Christiane F. (Bleak Week screening) and The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (on Criterion Channel) were each a revelation.

I guess this is my year to fill in 70s/80s German cinema blind spots (with many more to go).
What is the best movie not from this year that you’ve seen this year? Bonus points if you say why

New Yorkers should be able to protest with safety and dignity.

But the NYPD’s SRG - a violent unit trained in military-style crowd control tactics - consistently violates that right. That’s why we need the City Council to pass the CURB Act -- and the first step is getting a hearing on the books.

I'm hard-pressed to think of a non-Jewish Democratic politician who has spoken to Jews with more respect and empathy than Mamdani. The fact that many Jewish establishment orgs are going after him while staying relatively mum on resurgent Nazism is a disaster, both for American Jews and in general.

I wonder how much of this chart is a measure of what each group believes vs. of how far a billionaire-backed, targeted hate campaign can distort an election? What would the breakdown be if not for their influence?

I'm assuming the Ackman-Bloomberg-Lauder spend wasn't targeted at "None" and "Other."
This is a stunning political realignment--Mamdani lost Jews, Catholics, and Protestants but won by sweeping "Other" and "None."

As a Jewish voter in the 33% I hope my neighbors (literally) in the 63%, who were flooded with dishonest mailers, social media, and texts, will now keep an open mind.

I would like for national political reporters to place a moratorium on “But what will voters in the rest of America think about New York City’s socialist mayor?” We don’t care! Red states are notably full of psycho politicians yet rarely do you see pundits asking Brooklyn people about them.
