Husic, who oversaw CSIRO cuts as the former science minister, said some in government see scientific agency funding as a ‘cost’ not an ‘investment’
Ed Husic has challenged his own government to “pry open the jaws of Treasury” to boost funding for Australia’s national scientific agency after it announced up to 350 research jobs would be cut to deal with an imminent budgetary cliff.
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) announced on Wednesday it would look to cut between 300 and 350 research unit roles as part of efforts to narrow its research scope and address an ageing property portfolio in need of urgent modernisation. Continue reading...

Thankfully I avoided the hotel room interviews. But my supervisor still provides advice about how to decline invites to hotel rooms as part of her standard advising package. And now I do the same.
If you are not in academia, you might not know this, but job interviews used to be held at conferences IN HOTEL ROOMS. Women candidates in a hotel room alone with often all-male committees. People sitting on beds! The horror stories I've heard.
I thing I sometimes thing about is that university departments were still doing job interviews in hotel rooms in the mid aughts

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Cooking up a special treat for the kids in my Archaeology of Institutions class. Reprising the turnip pudding from last time and trying a new dish, rice porridge. Both made to Bentham's specifications although scaled down a lot because experience tells me that no one wants more than a tiny taste🏺🗃️🍽️
