One of the things most quietly grieved amongst practitioners is the half-century of history and work in learning systems and technologies which have historically been categorized as “AI”, and they’ve all been run over by LLMs, and by the hype cycles the industry has *built* around LLMs. A huge loss.
There are quite a few ethical and justice oriented AI people who talk about having lifelong love for a vision of AI that is being trashed by the current thing, and I wonder if any of those positive visions have been articulated somewhere? What is it ppl think AI is supposed to be instead of this?

Zohran is stone cold man. Putting out an ad in Arabic after all the Islamophobic shit that’s been thrown his way? Pure swag.

Dems don’t need to copy his politics or even necessarily his campaign strategy, they need to learn how to grow a fucking spine.

Every interaction I’ve ever had with an LLM chatbot is like dealing with the laziest, most glib, self-satisfied student I’ve ever had. The one that is *sure* they can talk their C- into an A if they just smile wide and wear you down with ass-kissing bullshit. Why would I pay for this experience
I'm talking about paraphrase in class this week and was curious to know how ChatGPT would fare creating a lesson similar to the one I'm actually using (that I made without AI). I asked for a passage from a real article and then a good paraphrase. It did give me a passage. But the rest? Not great. /1

I continue to sincerely want the term “Kavanaugh Stop” to be a badge of shame for the rest of Brett Kavanaugh’s days; the only bit of writing he’s known or remembered for; his sole contribution to the Law; for him to perceive, in little stabs of self-awareness, that this will be his rancid legacy.
What a sick world.

I would love for a single democrat to reckon with the fact that conservatives are not in fact motivated by reasonable concerns. They are — just as they were with ‘concerns’ over blacks and gays and numerous other minorities over the last five decades — motivated by bigotry.

As usual with this issue, Harris is calling for a compromise that already exists. Every sporting body has standards for how long athletes must be on hormones before they can compete as women.

The problem isn’t that we’re ignoring ‘reasonable concerns,’ the problem is that republicans are lying.

Jaguar Land Rover outsourced big parts of their IT operations to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Now they’re two weeks into a ransomware shutdown, with no ready way to restore operations.

To TCS, this is just a contract. To JLR, it’s existential. It was foolish to outsource this.
To make more profits, JLR outsourced Security Operations, Enterprise Security Architecture, Governance Risk and Compliance, and IAM to TCS - and ultimately many of the existing staff got made redundant afterwards.

Should the government be on the hook here?

There are 1000x as many stories (and public conversations) demanding statements and opinions about Zohran’s view on something he’s never said than there are about Republicans — and the GOP-embracing dems in NYC — explicitly espousing white-supremacist views. Sliwa has never been asked about it once.

Cville peeps, it's time to make your voice heard!

Charlottesville city council is considering an action that will, in effect, criminalize homelessness in city limits.

We keep each other safe. Act now—there are simple steps in the thread below—and tell council to reject the police chief's request!
ACTION ALERT: Tell city council to reject the ordinance to ban camping on city property!

On Tuesday, September 2nd (tomorrow!), City Council will be considering an ordinance that would make it illegal to sleep on city property or to leave personal property unattended on city land. 🧵
We strongly object to the proposed ban on camping on public property in the city.

This inhumane policy was condoned by the current right wing Supreme Court in the Grant’s Pass decision, which Chief Kochis sites in his justification for the policy.

Homelessness is solved by housing, not policing.

This ‘blue states closed schools too long’ narrative is becoming increasingly entrenched in the Polite Center but it’s arguable at best.

Republican states had far more deaths during COVID and their students have roughly comparable learning loss.
I've never seen such a disconnect between Dem elected/staff/consultants and actual Dem voters.

The latter understand what's going on.

The former are awash in right-wing brainrot, hence @schatz.bsky.social blaming COVID mitigation and BLM marches for the GOP's wanton destruction of public health.

not just that he has no constitutional authority, there isn't even any particular legal or institutional mechanism by which the president can make anyone treat this as anything other than a weird advisory opinion.
This “explicit” is a weird editorial choice. The constitution gives the president no power over this at all. It’s not ambiguous.

You may have seen this story blowing up about Will Smith using AI to generate fake audiences to promote his latest tour, but the truth is more complicated. The audiences are real, but the footage was manipulated: first by Will Smith's team and then, without permission, by YouTube itself.
