Grok + X now seems to be awash with images undressing women, without consent. It is an issue with the potential for a very very broad coalition - across political divides - to insist the Musk platform gets back within the law, on all fronts, not just this example.

i think what gets overlooked is that part of the humor and charm of edits like these is that you're perfectly aware that someone sat down and spent their own time making it. they chose to do something cool or silly or stupid or genius, regardless of the results

For further context twitter added a button that allows users to generate ai images using existing art posts from artists. It removes glaze and it basically reskins the artwork by using the existing work as a base. Twitter is no longer a safe space for art

Heads up to artists still using Twitter- Twitter is now adding an "Edit image" button under all images posted on the site that allows everyone to feed it into genAI and modify it as they wish with a prompt

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.

Here’s a blurb on what I mean:
Some thoughts: When using GenAi as a mood board you don't get sources. This means you deprive yourself from knowledge. You generated a location? You deprived yourself of knowing more about the interesting parts of the world and why things came to be. Generate an armor or costume? You deprived yourself on real world techniques, function, form and history. You generated art inspirations? You deprive yourself of learning about artists from history or lock out living ones from potentially being hired. Ethical issues of using GenAi models aside, one ends up making visuals mood boards devoid of reality and history. With it one deprives themselves from learning about our world and who is living in it, inadvertently making your work weaker, because of how detached it is from our shared human reality and history.

Here's the email I sent to my senators this week, I have been contacting them regularly about this since May. Feel free to tweak it and make it your own:
Hello Senator, I'm writing to urge you to vote NO on all of these internet censorship bills: KOSA SCREEN Act, COPPA 2.0 RESET Act, Sammy Act, App Store Accountability Act, GAMING Act, Safe Messaging for Kids Act, Parents over Platforms Act Most of these bills claim to protect teens by placing a duty of care on online platforms to prevent exposure to harmful things to minors. But Republicans keep expanding the definition of "harmful." KOSA's sponsor said it would "protect minors from the transgender in this culture." The Heritage Foundation said it would use KOSA to block abortion information. Current FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson signed up "to fight wokeness" and "the trans agenda." The administration in power right now can't be trusted with laws like these. I am a trans author and illustrator, and I've been facing a huge amount of censorship of my work already over the past three years. My book Gender Queer: A Memoir has been the most challenged book in the United States for 3 of the of the past 4 years, and I've already had to face an obscenity lawsuit against my book. I think these bills would lead to my work being EVER more censored online than before. If passed, these bills will harm LGBTQ teens, adults, and anyone who needs information on reproductive health or abortion. Please vote NO on all of these bills! Please oppose this legislation, which will only lead to more censorship of our free speech. ~Maia Kobabe

I cannot stress enough that most ppl don't ever even think about calling their reps. I talk to ppl in my fam about it and they go "Huh? What?". But your reps work for YOU. They need to know what you actually care about. When we call in big numbers it ALERTS them, cuz they rarely hear from us.

these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous

this is worth sharing and educating people about

A neat goose hybrid posted to ‘What’s this Bird?’ but when you zoom in on the photos the bill details have been too manipulated by AI photo editing to be accurately assessed for which species may be involved. Scroll on… A cool-looking Red-tailed Hawk that someone is wondering which subspecies it might be - right up my alley! But when you zoom in on the photos literally every feather group has been so heavily manipulated and altered by AI editing that it’s impossible to determine subspecies because the photo is essentially fake now; just a mashup of whatever AI thinks parts of a Red-tail should look like. Scroll on… WOW! That’s a remarkable trail cam photo of a Bobcat! It almost looks like a painting!… but the head looks oddly small…. hmmmm. After some prodding the original photo is produced and sure enough it had been so heavily altered by AI ‘post processing’ that the photo posted was essentially a digital mock-up with totally different proportions and fur markings. No longer the photo off the trail cam; it may as well have just been ‘created’ by AI from scratch. This stuff is killing me. My days on social media are becoming very limited. We can’t even trust simple, everyday photos of animals to be real. The wildlife community needs to quit editing with AI, and we need to start calling out photographers that are using it. Our reality is being destroyed all around us.
