Queer bookstores died in 2010. We had a funeral and everything!

Except... a ton of people decided to roll up their sleeves and start *new* queer bookshops, all over the place. In cities. In tiny towns.

My latest newsletter is about the rebirth of the LGBTQ bookshop:

Why aren’t more people warning about the GOP’s SAVE Act, including its requirement that states launch new voter purge programs??? History shows that Rs “love* over-broad purges. Tellingly, SAVE proposes *no penalty* for faulty purges but potential *prison time* 4 a single faulty voter registration.
😳 Musk’s “DOGE” overhauled the The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (“SAVE”) program,” which Trump & MAGA want states to use to PURGE supposed noncitizens from the VOTER ROLLS under the GOP’s proposed “SAVE Act”.

Experts warn that “SAVE” isn’t accurate enough for this. WTH?!!! 1/

I am so panicked that people are going to stop buying books right now. And I don’t just say this because I have a book coming out in April. I am saying this also because indie bookstores are doing a lot of protest support work and need the business. And my friends have books coming out too.
Please buy books that are coming out this year.

Doesn’t have to be mine. But there is a stellar release calendar this year especially of Black writers and it would be a shame if one of the fascist victories was people not buying those books (from the indies that are in the fight with us). #BookSky

The GOP’s new Voter Suppression bill, the so-called “SAVE Act,” would disenfranchise many of the 69 million women who took their husbands’ last names, as explained in my summary.

It proposes *no penalties* for erroneous voter purges but potential *prison time* for erroneous registrations. WTF?! 1/

And what will be the next Jaunty Ocean Critter?

In December, scientist unveiled a new squid found in the nodule fields of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. A whiplash squid that buries itself in the mud, apparently using it's tentacles as lures.

Rs are trying to push thru the “SAVE Act” creating a bureaucratic nightmare for new voters (eg college students), married women, & voters trying to re-register (after being wrongly purged by the GOP) or trying to fix their registration if GOP operatives switch it w/o their consent (as has happened).
Related and important! They are attacking elections on multiple fronts.

Hey everyone!

Huge news! Our trans girl scout list has sold a total of 146,000 boxes as of today!

But MANY trans girl scouts only have 20, 30, 40 boxes sold.

I just resorted our list to put those on the top.

Go get your girl scout cookies and make a trans kid's day!

Flowflex is also my go-to rapid test.

From the data it has done the best to maintain a high level of sensitivity compared to other rapid tests.

(Although they are also overdue for an update in test target).

Particularly when one does a combined cheek, throat, and nasal swabbing.
20% off FlowFlex COVlD tests at Pharmalynk.

It's the test I trust and the company I've ordered from consistently the past 2 years. Better validity and lower cost than other rapid antigen tests.

I do not receive any revenue from any product or company, just a good deal.

A short and glossy but useful history of American borders and why ICE and the services it provides are extremely unnecessary

Like we don’t need anything that ICE does (or much of what INS did)

If you’re older than 25, you’re older than ICE.And that’s precisely why refusing to abolish it is actually the extreme position. For most of American history, we did not have immigration enforcement as we know it today. From roughly 1800 to 1924, the United States operated with what was effectively an open-border system. There were no visas, no green cards, no deportation force. If you arrived, you were generally allowed to stay — and in time, you became American. Then came a familiar chain of events.A global Spanish Flu pandemic swept the world in 1918. Supply chains were snarled. Inflation surged. Economic anxiety spread. And political leaders, facing fear and instability, went looking for someone to blame.Inflation rises. Housing tightens. Supply chains strain. And once more, immigrants are blamed for economic forces they did not cause. Fear hardens into grievance. Scarcity becomes political currency. And the instinctive response is to close off rather than invest forward. The scapegoat was immigrants. Isolationism surged and America elected the most scandal-plagued president in its history — well, until now. So, in 1924, Congress passed the Immigration Act — effectively shutting down immigration through national-origin quotas designed explicitly to preserve the country’s existing ethnic makeup. In fact, so awful was this law that the drafters wrote its racism into the Congressional Record: “The purpose of this act is to preserve the ideal of U.S. homogeneity.” It’s radical, it’s disgusting, and frankly it’s Stephen Miller and Donald Trump’s explicit position. They consider it an intellectual underpinning but really, it’s just simply racist. After 1924, legal immigration collapsed almost overnight. Paired with tariffs and protectionism, those policies did not protect American workers. They deepened and prolonged the Great Depression, destabilized democracies abroad, and helped create the political conditions that ultimately led to World War II.If that story feels eerily familiar, it should. And we are living through the same dumb mistakes again. Closed borders did not save the economy. They helped break it.[cont. in comments]

Hoo boy, everyone should bookmark this @parkermolloy.com piece & make sure everyone involved in media reads it.
